Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Just a thought (differentials)

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by 05ls_soldier » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:54 pm

Well because of my recent discovery about my splined disconnect being broken, I am trying to decide if this would be a good time to switch to 3.73's. Since I can only seem to find the whole front carrier assembly with gears and everything. And my local scrap-yard has a ext with 3.73's and a G80, they only wan't $350 for the rear-end. I think that would be a great upgrade, I do not have the G80 right now.
As of right now I need to put my new tranny in and fix the 4wd before I can lift it anyways, But is the G80 and 3.73's worth not being able to lift for another month or 2? that 350 would be my lift kit and struts!

Opinions Please?

All depends in your mission. I have the low-gear option,... makes it a bit sluggish, but not bad... I drive fairly gently. The G80 is handy if you're in any terrain where you may be lifting a tire off the ground. If you just hit mud, you're probably fine without.

True, I drive like a grandma nowadays, and down here we mainly just have mud. I have awhile to think about it though, since I will be in wyoming for the next month training, maybe I'll even save enough to finish it!

Well, I fixed the trans today. Just got a junk-yard one with 30,000 miles on it. threw in a corvette servo while I had it out! All together it took me like 7 hours to swap out. Its so nice having all gears again! Now tomorrow I have to go weld my exhaust back together because both bolts that attach to muffler snapped. Parts are on the way for the splined disconnect. Updates will follow.

Good job! 7 hours is a nice turn around. Hi-Five.

And you will notice the Vette servo. It will chirp your belts at WOT.

Got everything tight? :raspberry:

Yea, I got everything tight. I will have it back in the shop tomorrow after 50 miles to double check everything, and weld up the exhaust. Also I just went out in the garage and noticed a bit of fluid on the floor, so I will investigate that, hoping its just some over-spill. I may even do my 4x4 service. Its slowly coming together! cant wait to go up!

Glad to hear you got it all fixed up. Although I am not a fan of the vette servo. I think mine will be coming out. Although I do like my transgo shift kit.

you should look into it.

i think it is called

Well, I was out crawling around the underside of my truck earlier, and I was thinking, how hard would it be to fab up 2 brackets to drop the front diff down the 2 inches needed to get the thing out of the oil pan, you could even put a tube in between the 2 sides and just slide it up there, bolt it on then bolt up the factoy diff/carrier assembly. I know we would still have the ball joints limiting the amount of lift, but less angle=less stress on CV and bearings. Any ideas? I know other vehicles lift kits have diff drop brackets, whats so different about our platform?

It's more than 2". More like 5" at the least. Then you run into the IFS subframe.

Point taken. Sometimes the thoughts in my head out-weigh my common sense. Now I'm embarrassed

Indeed... if no one brought up new ideas, we'd still be making fire by rubbing sticks together.

And lying on the ground, contemplating the underside of the vehicle, is a noble pastime. You can get ideas, look for damage, identify mystery items, or at the very least - memorize the layout to get a mental picture of how to choose the optimum line over obstacles. You need a good mental map of the bottom to match it to the rock field you're about to enter.
