Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

disconnect technical questions

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

Just to clarify, this is for sleeved trucks only, right? Also, do you see it possible to cut the holes in it for an actuator?

Eric,
this subs the AWD spool in for the disconnect. We will figger out some way to mount the linear actuator up "out of the way" and there is provisions for a zerk fitting, just have to position it again " out of the way. "

Are you thinking about putting a couple of gussets around that tube to the flange just cause that cv moves around a good bit

Moots,
No not really. The tube diameter increased with the bearing size. So the loads are actually reduced from the original housing. We Tigged the tube to the plate on both sides then true it up on the lathe to ensure concentricity.
Pretty sure that unless you are running 48" tires with a blown v12 its gonna do ok. :)

That looks beefy. Nice work.

Sean, question this new design replaces the outside half of the disconnect right? At least the part you made and have drawing of.

Dang it! 48's and a blown V12 were in my plans! ugh, I guess I'm gonna have to dial it back some! :finger:

You're terminology confuses me with the word spool. I believe you are refering to the sleeve? The reason I bring it up is because when I hear spool, I think of a lunchbox locker (this would go on the other side of the oil pan). Maybe I'm the only one, but back home with the Michigan Rednecks... that's what we called em. haha

Meh, not even a lunchbox locker is a spool. A spool is both wheels constantly locked no matter what the conditions are.

This appears to be a new outer housing for the disconnect that supports the AWD sleeve a bit better.

If it doesnt change the length of the housing by much it might be an improvement. If it does increase the length you might see more passenger side CVs dying. Time and specs will tell.

Regaurdless, it's really nice to see some new parts and innovation being done.

v7guy,
overall length is the same as the original housing. only difference is the diameter and load capacity of the bearings and had to change the outer seal.

TByoda, yes that is correct this will replace the outer housing delete the shift fork and substitute the AWD sleeve in for the disconnect splines.

Eric, I do know however where ya can get that v12 ! LOL
I think the correct terminology is AWD sleeve.

I like it. Good concept. Even IF you find the need for thicker gauge, or gussets, or different bearing... You've certainatly made a large step towards an alternative for the disco! You could stock up on some AWD sleeves and sell it as a kit!

Erik we may adjust the material for production runs. This one was done as a proof of concept. We are also looking to see if we can get the internal splines cut on blanks for the AWD spool cheaply.
I intend on making sure this works properly before marketing it. But it will be available after that !

This is all good stuff, I bet you could get others to help out in the testing phase a if you make few. ;)

I suppose we wont have any accurate cost/benefit ratio until these are tested in the field. Have you compared the rebuild cost to your current investment yet?

Impressive progress so far! Wish I had those abilities and equipment.

I would offer my vehicle as a tester, however, given this shithole state it wouldn't do it justice... unless your testing it's resistance to mud/water penetration :(

DirtyBacon,
shooting for the upgrade to be competitive with a new unit cost wise. (not dealer or advance auto cost)
Right now a spitball swag is the housing will be about 200 bucks more than a AWD Sleeve rebuild with new bearings seals and washers.

sand is a killer of parts, dont sell yourself or state short. lol
