Broken Transfer Case & Upgrade to 4.10 gears

I was able to download the manuals from somewhere for my 06. I expect it was trailvoy.
the one for the 06 is 86MB zipped.

These codes may have been there before this happened. I doubt the truck has gone far enough to set any codes.

So should I consider ordering 2 of these? I'm going away for 2 weeks on Monday. I was hoping to have the truck back on the road beforehand... but that doesn't look to be happening.

Did you find the ZIP file Chris talked about? If so, you need to run the tests. This is the first area I would look at and then move to the more important bits. Hopefully it's something simple.

Must drill the tests.

I think the clue is that the speedometer isn't working.

You had the rear VSS plug get pulled out, I think you have a bad connection there. The PCM therefore has no idea what speed you're going, and will not shift.

and since it's an earlier model it would also make the brake and ABS angry. I think James might be on to something.

The wires appear to be intact. I double checked them just now, but same issue when I drove it around block again. No speedo.

I would think that would throw a code, but I don't know for sure. I'm guessing.

How did you check the wires? With a multimeter?

Change out the sensors with a known good one from your prior transfer case. If that makes no difference to the speedometer, then swap the plugs. The two VSSs on the TC output are the same part number and same operation. They just send the data to different places from what I can tell.

If the good VSS doesn't change things, then I suspect your wiring.

Tried swapping out the sensors... no change. Going to check continuity on the wires next...

Tested continuity, tested fine. I plugged it all back together, fired it up again. I have working speedo! I have the rear axle on stands right now, so I could test speedo without leaving driveway. Will bring it down and and take it around the corner again.

My tires don't seem to be balanced very well, though. With the axle in the air, the wheel spin was shaking the heck out of the truck...

EDIT:

BTW... the ABS and BRAKE lights went out too!!!

FWIW, this might be relevant to your situation or not. With the electronic shift transfer cases, if you unplug the gear indicator sensor and turn on power at all, the TCCM looses track of what gear the T-case is in and it refuses shifts to protect itself. You need to reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a bit and it relearns the gear that the T-case is in. I've gone through that with my truck and a buddies truck. He had transmission work done and because they unplugged the t-case wire harness, it lost track of the gear, it let him shift into 4x4 and than it wouldn't let it shift out of it, and the lights on the switch and the gear the T-case was in did not match. Reset the computer and all is well.

Because you have been unplugging and replugging in wires, you and your TCM might be facing a similar issue.

Main harness was never unplugged while the battery was connected. Pretty sure the issue was a bad connection at one of the sensors... I think the pigtail INSIDE the plug loosened a bit.

Mario, first I have looked into your thread and wow that broken parts are simply wow..
Okay but here is something I have reminded from another thread. You have changed your gears to 4.10 gears correct?
Cable810 had the same symptoms (ABS light and parking brake light) in another thread here after changing to 4.10 gears:

So I don´t think that has something to do with your trans. I think these are two different problems.

Drove it around block... good news and bad news.

Good news: shifted fine and drove fine, except for some shake, which I attribute to poor balancing and lack of alignment.
Bad news: on a couple of occasions, the speedometer dropped and the ABS and BRAKE lights came on. Looks like an iffy connection. I might look into new plugs and I'd cut and solder them onto the main harness.

I don't recall unplugging anything from the transmission while doing this work.

The only thing I could think of, is with the 2 plugs that go into the TC housing where mine broke. I might have them crossed.

Took her for a drive out to Firestone for an alignment! Breaking in the ring and pinion so I'm taking it easy. The entire trip there, noticed a grinding coming from the rear while stopping. Got my alignment, all within spec now, or at least very close!! My TOE was WAY out!!!!



On the way home, more grinding while stopping. All of a sudden, at a light, the rear locks up! WTF! I get out and look underneath, nothing is dangling or looks out of place. I inspect the wheels/brakes... that's when I noticed the issue. In what is possibly the most epic fail of all time, I had left out a bolt. The pass side caliper was only held on by the lower bolt, even this one was loose. The caliper worked it way outwards and started grinding on the inside of the wheel. To the point where it locked up. I took the wheel off and moved the single bolt to the top, tightened as much as I could with just the lug wrench in my possession.. made it home.

Aside from this little snag, she drove pretty good! I'm looking forward to post break in period when I can really see how she rides.
