Snorkel

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

From what I've found, it looks like the F150 intake system James found would be perfect. If the S10 blazer washer container has the same style pumps as ours I'm betting it would take care of everything I need.

This hasn't been a huge priority for me, I've been doing allot of side work to keep my family afloat, as glamorous as it sounds working at an Offroad shop, it doesn't really bring in the bacon like I would like it to, so the side work is mandatory. Needless to say when I don't have side work, I find it hard to get motivated enough to go put several hours into my 1 of 100's of projects calling my name. No instead we usually take the family rafting, riding, camping, sledding, basically anything to get us out of the house!! With winter here, I usually find my side work and Fab jobs slow down, and I put this mod on the top of my list..(Yes I actually have a real list) I also already have the steel for my sliders and bumper, I've just been using my bender for too many other people :wallbash: !

Anyways, back to the subject.. In the picture below, you'll see where I wanted to go through the inner fender well, unfortunately, that is right where the structural support is. I need the 3" hole to be directly below where it is in my picture! And as you can see the stupid washer bottle is there :shoot: . We just got a new wrecking yard in town that is a "U-pull-it" yard, I'll have to go check them out. All the other wrecking yards in this area are horrible :puker: !!!

Well the S10 washer fluid reservior should fit there and give you that extra 3 inches below the line, if not, another member suggested to me finding a pipe plastic most likley that starts out round and very quickly turns oval while making a 90 degree turn and then returning to the original shape. This could help if we can only access 2-2.5 inches of vertical sheet metal.

But great to hear that your back in the game, hopefully you'll beat us east-coasters to it! :friday:

I think I'm going to make my own out of pvc piping and paint it black.I'll put a cone filter at the end of it with a cover.

Thats a good idea if thats the way you want to go with it, but the problem still arises to where your gonna pass the pipe through the Fender... I'm actually gonna be building a pvc one for 86K20's truck soon, but luckily we he doesn't have the same issues.

My buddy is planning on doing this to his Jeep. A different idea on a snorkel. I dont think we have the room on the cowl, but still cool to see and might give one of you some ideas.

Cool, you could just add tube for more height if you needed it while out on the trail. ;)

Hmmm... will do some measuring when I have time tomorrow to figure some things out... I like the cowl snorkel idea.

Wasn't someone on the OS talking about doing this.... I was really looking foward to the finished product!
I think he had parental permission issues or something!!

I doubt our cowl is that deep, but i actually like that idea... one issue is that i really doubt it would look good on out trucks.

why not just get a re loaction kit that comes with a smaller washer fluid bottle, and put it somehwere esle. and build a harness for its built in pump using the old harness from the stock tank. that way you can put anywhere you want and have has much room as you need for the hole. your gona have to make a wholoe new box for the intake filter anyways depending on where you move that, if u do

Don't know... it wasn't me. Haven't had parental permission issues since I was 17. I just get caught up with work and bills and delay my projects ceaselessly.

Unless you plan on rearagning the whole engine compartment the airbox really has to stay in the same spot.

That's pretty muych the idea, use another washer bottle or build one, put it out of the way for an air box Like the one James found out of a F-150.. I just gotta get to it :angry whip:

Let me say first, I respect what you guys want to do, although I wonder if it’s more of a cosmetic mod than one for actual use.

Instead of cutting into your trucks has anyone thought of just removing the hood and making an attachment that will come straight up at the point where the flex tube mounts to the intake?
Or, how about a second hood with a hole cut in it? Isn’t the idea to make the truck able to get through deep water, not to make it pretty?

Sorry if I read this here but, the idea of a closed system (removing the intake filter and replacing it with a plug end and fitting for a pressure regulated air line) using an air tank seems fairly possible for a decent engineer.

You mean supplying your engine with compressed air instead of ambient air?

I mean, it's theoretically possible. Essentially you'd be creating your own supercharger... in a way. But a small compressor couldn't even keep up with an idling engine I'd imagine. So you'd have to prime the tank before the crossing. Then essentially you'd have to have a valve that you modulate as you modulate the throttle to adjust the amount of air you're letting into the intake. You could go completely submersible!

However, that's not really realistic and would probably cost more than a snorkel.

And yeah, if you're 100% about functionality, you could have a 3 foot pipe sticking straight out of your engine compartment. However, every one of us is somewhat compelled to make a nice looking vehicle. If we weren't, we'd have gotten an old beat up jeep. So I see a safari snorkel as a beautiful marriage of functionality and aesthetic domination.

James :excited: I know I saw the compressed air idea on a site I found on Google. (Thanks by the way, on the google thing wink, wink!) I thought you might like that idea. :poke: Engineering and all.

As for the truck looking nice-I wonder if putting a snorkel on these trucks and pics on the web, would only make comrades like Roadie and Teebes have to even venture further away from places like the Rubicon. You know the deafest laughter and pointing.

Did you really say- "aesthetic domination"? Issues James?

You mean like this?

Well for me and most of us Jersey guys we encounter deep water very often. Last time I was down offroading, I had water washing onto my hood, and no it wasn't because i was going to fast, i do them enough that i know how to cross safely. The water at one point washed midway up the hood... at that point if you slow down at all you're gonna hydrolock and flood your truck completely up to the seats. This is one of the reasons i'm doing the body lift, bc it raises the intake by 3 inches, and will help with water crossings.
