Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

What did you do to your GMT today?

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by tbangert » Sat Mar 23, 2013 7:40 pm

Permanently removed the gears from my splined disconnect and replaced them with an awd spool. Next... find a way to go and pick up an 8.6 axle and get these gears off my couch and in my truck!

Finally got around to removing my intake resonator and cleaned the throttle body while I was at it. Hacked off the exhaust resonator too and hit every nut and bolt I could think of with penetrating oil to help with my lift install. Should be doing that next weekend

That's something I need to do!

Mine is in, just not configured for anything other than the basics.

Got a quick how to for someone that is limited on time before moab?

Continuing the bumper work before my brother leaves to return to the land of snow and slush and brats on Tuesday

The apprentice (me) is qualified to run the plasma cutter and do tacks and grind welds and put away the tools at the end of the day. I can't be trusted to do the finish welding yet.

Looking good Bill! Where did you source the welder from if you don't weld a lot?

Put my exhaust back to stock minus the resonator. Oil, air filter and fuel filter. Cleaned out the clutter in the back and mocked up where my sliders are going to go.

Looks nice Bill, makes me want to get to work on mine. Looking forward to the finished project. The only thing that helps welding is to get time behind the torch!

That's how I saw a lot of the U.S., used to toss some clothes in the Firebird and just go for a couple days. It'd be nice to go exploring trails in that mindset.

Wahugg wrote:Looking good Bill! Where did you source the welder from if you don't weld a lot?
I borrowed a Harbor Freight plasma cutter and cheap flux wire welder (no gas) from Teebes/Greg. I haven't used the welder because my brother (the professional) said it didn't have the power for 3/16" plate. I wanted to use 1/8", but I gave my brother the money to go get the steel and he got his way because he felt strongly I'd be backing into rocks and he didn't want *his* bumper to get dented. I wish he hadn't made that decision for me, but he's doing 90% of the work, so I just shut up. I'll take it off and weigh it later and then cry.

The plasma cutter rocks. Never an issue except for the 30A extension cord Greg made up had a loose ground and I tightened it all up.

So the welding we've been doing with a Millermatic 175 I rented for $75 a week from the son of a co-worker who used to be in business with his Dad (muffler and brake and general repair) shop. It's a $1000-1200 unit to buy. The Dad just retired, gave all the tools to his kid, who is working in another garage now that doesn't have the 220 receptacle installed yet for the welder. Consumables are an issue, but I have to assume regular rental places who rent welders don't provide the consumables. So I told the renter that I'd give him the left over from a 10 pound spool of wire in trade for using up some of his gas. But now the gas tank is about empty and I have to trade it today and have no idea what that's going to cost. 100 CF tank of 75% argon / 25% CO2. Anybody have a guess? How do typical rental places deal with this?

Almost done now:

Oh haha no. Just the regular Bilsteins, replacement springs (factory rate), and one of marks original kits I got from someone on here or TV I can't remember. I don't have the money or needs for the adjustables or higher spring rates.
