I cut my old cat off a couple years ago, thinking it might be plugged. Installed a new one and burned a hole through the element in that one in six months. (Probably a bad thermostat, replaced) Welded the stock one back on and left it.
My front manifold bolts back out over time, I have to tighten them more often than I've ever touched a set of header bolts. I've been dealing with that for years. I couldn't tell you if my manifold is cracked because it sounds like a diesel most of the time anyway. I've learned to live with it.
Enter Kooks.
A new stock cat/downpipe and manifold is ~$400. For $700, I replace all of that, pick up a few HP and (maybe) a couple MPG, and don't have to touch my welder?
No brainer.
