Steering Stop

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

With Mark's 3" suspension lift and UCA flip, I seem to be getting tripod noise at full lock. I didn't notice the binding on the install and it is not tire rub. Am I at the limit of the tripod?

I can't find it now but there was someone who increased the steer stop size. So what spacer is needed and how was it attached if this is the solution?

That was me.

There is a tab on the LCA that is the current stop. Weld a nut onto each of those. You can bottom a short bolt out inside the nut if you need more.

Steering stops are really for outer CV life under power. At full steering lock the CV joint's engagement in the shell is very shallow and with the locker I was cracking the shells. The tripot really doesn't factor into that situation. I never had noise even at ~4.5" of lift. I don't think anyone else has had to bother with them.

How old are your half shafts?

Seems your front end has problems in areas many of us with: similar lifts or more lift do not. Thinking maybe your front end is jacked.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

Fishsticks, are you the only one that has had to limit the steering? Is this because you have broken most of the parts?

It seems to me that it is when we take mechanicals to their limits is when we recognize the problems.

As far as my TB goes, it has not been in an accident and there has never been a driveability problem while stock. It does have 215 KM on it but ball joints, tie rods and A arm bushings all seam tight. It has had very light duty.

I pulled the half shafts to re-grease the tripods and replaced the boots. The tripods and outer CV's were not loose. So there is nothing obvious that there is a problem.

I know this is different than most of you have experienced, so I will continue to explore why. This weekend I plan to pull it apart and hopefully find out what is going on.

I small but significant observation: I started with tire pressures at 35 psi. This was from the tire install. I felt everything; road and steering response. I am now running 24 psi on the front and 22 psi on the back. Ride comfort and steering response are great. Darting still happens but tolerable. Cornering is firm with the 3 ply side walls; no excessive roll. The reason I bring this up, I have always loved driving the TB because of the comfortably ride. I now have it back almost!

As far as I know, I'm the only one... and when I replaced my LCAs, I didn't bother add stops to the new ones. I only put them in to try to save the outer CVs from breakage. That breakage only occurred because I combined 35s and a front locker. I ran 265/70/17s with the front locker without problems.

Long story short, I don't run them anymore either.

Fishsticks, could you hear the outer CV making noise at full lock? This is of course not at full extension or under load so it will get worse on the trail - your breakage!

All I hear at full lock is the sound of the ratchet in the front locker. Never heard any clicking out of the CVs themselves.
