Rearend ?

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by scfd456 » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:44 pm

I have a 02 TB 4x4, is lifted with 31's. It has the stock drivetrain. My question is what comes on it for the rear end(size, stock gear)? I looked at the codes in the glovebox n it don't show the infamous G80. Is this something I can add by just changing out the internals of the stock rear end? Or will I need the changing the whole rear axle/rear end? I don't do a lot of hard trail off roading, just a lot of back country hunting n it has bit me to many time not having a locking diff. :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: . Any help would be great.

Just a heads up, Detroit now offers a true-trac for the 8.0 rear end which is what a majority of the tb's have stock with the 3.42(rpo code GU6)gears. IMHO the truetrac is a much more viable option of got a couple buddies who run them in their jeeps and trucks with great results. It's listed as a limited slip but it's more like a hybrid between an automatic locker and a limited slip except it has no clutches to wear out like a true locker. Also it is substantially cheaper then even the g80 by itself. Just some food for thought. Check out ringandpinion.com if you want to find the exact price(I think its $425).

No, it's not a locker but it works like this, if one wheel is slipping then it takes the torque to that wheel the only way a locker out performs this is if one of your rear wheels is off the ground then it won't be able to transfer the torque obviously but I know I usually don't get my rear wheels off the ground so it's a better option for me. Do some research on it check the reviews on other forums hell, check it out on YouTube then make your decision. That's what I did and it sold me on it. It's cost effective and in a lot of people's opinion better than the g80.

I dont think it will work for me. There are many times I get a rear wheel off the ground and need power to the other side. Yesterday that was a problem for me quite a few times. Couple spots I only had 1 front and 1 rear tire on the ground, even with both sway bars disconnected. Guess Im still on the hunt for a 8.6 open rear.

Just because a wheel is touching the ground doesn't mean there's actually any weight/traction at that wheel.

Any LSD can/will still spin one wheel, even if it's on the ground.

I ran a true trac in my front 44 of the toyota. I think its a great limited slip, and its just that. Lift a tire and its the same as a open diff. I would run one for street, snow, fire roads, etc. But lifting a tire, ie: crawling, requires a true locker.

Then thats definitly what I need. Where we usually go, seems always a wheel in the air. I played hell in a few spots this weekend.

Correct me if I am wrong but what I read about the LSD is that if one tire is off the ground that tire gets 70% while the one on the Ground Receives 30% of the power roughly.

I understand some people have the resources and extra cash to do the diff. swap but for those of us who don't, I'm just saying this is a viable option for those of us with the 8.0. Not sure bout y'all but even with some of the crazy trails I've tried my hand at here in Colorado I've only had a rear wheel in the air maybe twice, both of which was corrected by backing up a bit and taking a different line. So is it a locker? No, do I think it's overall better then the g80? yes I do. My g80 more or less exploded and I recently picked up one of these. Not to mention I know a lot of us on here use our tb's as our daily driver. Anyway rant done lol

I spent alot of time researching the truetrac because I really do not want to go through the pain of an axle swap. The true truetrac acts like a limited slip in which you can be somewhat abusive and not have to worry about clutch packs wearing out. But when on wheel gets off the ground it acts like an open diff. But, if you apply the parking brake or regular brake it "tricks" the diff to transfer the torque to the other side. I confirmed this with an eaton rep (called the number on the website) But when I asked if it would transfer enough torque to actually get me going he said in theory it should work. I called westcoast differentials (800-448-0950) and asked the same question. He pretty much said the same thing as the eaton rep. But added that he had one on his bronco and loves it. He said he has not specifically had a wheel off the ground because he has enough wheel travel.
so in the end I'm still not sure. so I'm going to the yard tomorrow and getting a 8.6 for $250 (they have more than one) then getting either a lock rite or elocker.

check out this link on you tube. the guy shows how to fool the diff.
