Mud Flaps

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by Dirtyd » Sun Apr 29, 2012 11:25 pm

Now that I'm lifted with bigger tires there is going to be lots of rock, salt and road debris drilling the side of the tb. My previous car was a Subaru Impreza and a very popular mudflap is the rallyarmors, which are below.

Honestly I think the OEM flaps look weak and might not serve a huge purpose. Is there any ideas on this subject? I looked through all the build threads and searched and no one is running mudflaps.

I was thinking about buying some semi flaps and cutting them like the rallyarmor ones above and getting my own hardware from the hardware store. There is not a lot of mounting locations that would support a diy project. Any ideas?

I have extra sets of rallyarmors, I was thinking of making a template with cardboard and multiplying the dimensions by double or even more. But still don't know what material to buy and correct mounting locations.

I think if you're worried about preserving the paint, you're in for a surprise. Change your mindset, or you could potentially put yourself into a dangerous situation because you're trying to preserve the paint. There are plenty of times when the best line to take will put your doors into a bush. You should see my paint - looks like someone ran a key down it. That's why most people don't have mud flaps. Steve only has flaps to retain it's street legality...

I agree with james. Your best bet may be the clear bra from 3M, its a heavy duty clear film that's applied to protect the paint.

Should just move to co, lol, best quote I heard was, "as long as it has wheels, a headlights, taillight, and brakes, its legal in co"

Really though, like James said, the best line may take you into bushes, or tree branches, trail pin striping is inevitable.

Backwoods pin striping builds character.

Couldn't agree more. Definitely have had to sacrifice paint for safety quite a few times.

wow... You're good. I'd rather not have the mud flaps but I could not pass the Vermont inspection without them.

I think he was referring to the other Steve (ChevyCrew), but yeah, I guess both Steves are running Mudflaps lol. Interesting, I had never heard of needing mudflaps to be street legal. Does it have to do with being over a certain tire size?

That's funny... Not here in Vermont. They require EVERY vehicle to have one, even our tiny little Carolla had to have them to pass inspection but they were ridiculous about mine. Apparently here in VT no truck can be lifted more than 5" from stock height and retain street legality. Most of the bigger "rigs", as they are referred to, are registered as farm equipment. There are so few cops around here that no one cares. And yes, they called Chevy and got the original specs on my TB then measured. It was a rather humorous event but in he end the biggest issue was my lack of mud flaps, so I purchased a cheap set an put them on and went back for round 2. I thought for sure they were going to go bat crazy on my lacking a resonator because it technically no longer clears the body but they spent hours hounding me over what kind of mud flaps I needed to order to pass inspection. Oh and they said I could go as high as 35" tires and still retain street legality.
