Dana 44 Swap

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

I think I remember reading in steves build he thought a 44 would require less lift based on size of the housing. Its going to be interesting might have to do a rear d44 on leaf as well?

I would not run a rear 44, it won't hold up. Try a semi-float 14 bolt in 6 lug flavor, ebay a take out e-locker. Front, use the F-250 housing with chevy knuckles out. Axles will be 67" wide. (I originally built my wifes truck this way, ill get a link to the build) With the stock oil pan ill guess 10" of lift over stock. While the 44 housing is smaller, its also more centered.

Steve so I take it I am going to have to do something with my rear to get it to balance out right. Will I need to do leaf rear and will a stock transfer case match up with a 14 bolt semi float. What about a 10 bolt front.

The SS rear is a 14 bolt semi float. Mine works great.

The stock t-case needs ditched when going solid axle. Tahoes have a 10 bolt rear, but they are weak.

An s10 blazer or truck 27 spline np231 case is the one you want, find a early one with the fixed front output. This case will bolt to the stock trans and adapter. This is what anton is running.

What's the problem with the stock transfer case?

It Prob has something to do with the front disconnect and how our 4x4 engages. Said and done i was going to do sfa and its now turned into a full sas and keep the truck street legal in a state that hate off roading and modified cars and trucks

Stupid clutches. Needed for the nutty A4WD mode, but don't offer a true 100% lockup when fully engaged in 4HI. Also no aftermarket support, which I found when I called around to see if anybody had gears to make a 4-to-1 low range. The NP231 normally comes with the same 2.7-to-1 as ours, but you can get that fixed easily.

np231c with sye while at it. i agree with donny and would do 4.88s. think they would do well with 35s. wouldnt measure out the drive shafts till truck is sitting on all 4 tires. this project can easily be :wallbash: if not prepared! should turn out awesome tho.

Front DS could be cut/lengthened/reyoked if you HAVE to stay with the stock tcase for now. Its total in/out travel is pretty shitty though. Maybe cut the CV off and find a long spline DS of some sort.

Rear uses a standard u joint size if you need a longer replacement. You will need longer control arms/springs unless you're converting to leafs.

The stock t-case won't allow enough angle where the front shaft slides in.

6 on 5 1/2 pattern, chevy outers on a f-150 or f-250 housing, rear run the sf14 from a early 90s chevy truck in 6 lug. I think to get the lift in the rear no matter what you will be redesigning the rear suspension.
