Need opinions.

Ok, I have Firestone Destination M/Ts. They are some kick ass tires and I love how they perform. I plan on replacing them this spring, but I may need a couple of new ones before then. I found a pretty awesome deal of some BFG All Terrains. Same size and tread as Roadie and Foosh. 285/75/16. Would it behoove me to purchase and run these for winter, or am I better off squeezing as much life as I can out of the M/Ts, replacing in pairs if I have to. OR, should I meet in the middle and get a slightly less expensive Mud Tire. Helps me to think just by putting this into print. Any opinions are welcome.

Note: I haven't had any traction problems with the Firestones, but I doubt the fronts will be suitable for NJ inspection in January.

The BFG AT's are really nice and ride really nice, but don't get half the traction a good M/T will. Brendan went through stuff i got stuck in ...

Tom, i think if you had more tread though you woulda been through, and no 4x4 issue. Bot, id wait for the tires, why spend money when you dont need to yet? Itd be a waste of money IMO. Dont worry about inspection, mine was overdue since 02/09 it can wait till march april when you get new tires for spring. Keep the M/Ts for winter. In snow, a skinny tire is better, so since yours are already pretty wide keep the teeth with the mts. This is suppoed to be a crazyy winter here so just save up for a nice set once spring time comes.

Even with that, I am staying with 33" tires. So I am worrying about safety first.

So here's where I am... I either run my M/Ts, with two of them quite close to replacement, and hope I don't need to replace before I am ready for all new. OR I snag up a ridiculous deal on 33" BFG ATs(which I already run one as my spare), sell my MTs to someone cheap, and save so I can go for new 33" MTs and 16x8 wheels come spring. I am leaning towards the latter. Although I may have to sacrifice some traction, I will have enough tire to last as long as I need them so I can make sure to save for something I really want. Bear in mind I am out of work for nearly a year, starting school in January, and living on unemployment.

Thats basically what I'm doing... Put on a cheapo set till i can afford new 16x8's and a real nice m/t. Plus if you put on BFG A/T anything you go through i could follow and visa versa. But are does it make sense to swap tires and spend the money for mount and balance for the new set?

That's why the thread helps me think. There are a few thing to consider. I was going to go with Ats from the start, but found these first. I can more than make my money back on the muds, and I can get mounted/balanced for $30. With the deal on these BFGs, I may actually see money in my pocket. And I'll be able to get an alignment since the tires have even wear, unlike my Firestones.

Very nice, I say do it! You saw that i didn't have too many problems down in wharton last time... Other then in crazy deep mud pits, the A/T's work well, but for that couple mud pits we hit on the trail the M/T's are really worth it. Until Spring I'm running my A/T's so i have quite a while to make a decision.

So, he came back at me with a really good offer. 40% tread left on them. Have to decide within the next day or two so I can pick them up on Saturday. I'll have to wrestle with it overnight.

Don't do it, you're wasting money. The M/Ts will be fine in the winter. They make it just slick enough to make it fun.

His current tires might not pass inspection, and he's got an opportunity to make money or come out even with better tires that he won't have to worry about when he goes to the dmv... I think his ideas are pretty valid here.

Eh, guys being a douche. He's one of those "i got another offer, and they can pick it up sooner." I don't want to deal with that shit. Found two matching tires to replace my fronts up in Maine, but dude won't ship. Even if I send a call tag. The search continues.

Nahh screw that aint worth it then...theres a few tire shops down here in newark by me, okayy so theres one on every corner, and im startin to notice they have offroad tires too so ill be shoppin around here for numbers

I've got a call out on some Goodyear MT/Rs. If that comes back neg, I'm either waiting for new Firestones, or I'm going to try out the Federals I found, since they are rated as well and only a fraction of the cost.

I have to say if you can swing it, those Firestone's are a sexy tire... If I wasn't already in love with BFG KM2's thats exactly what I'd get for the next tires, but the Federals are a really good price.

I'd either go with ATs for thesiping, which will make a big diff in snow, or try out those Federals. Can't go wrong at that price.

How much tread do they actually have left? Isn't the rule something about Lincoln's head on a penny?
