Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by The Rock Crawler » Wed Dec 14, 2011 7:34 pm

Hello, I am new here and just gettin into offroading. I have a couple question concerning my Envoy. It has 4wd but no, G80 locker. I want to get a New rear axle That has the G80. How difficult of an install is it? Also, What kind of modification is needed? Also, I want to stiffen my rear end, Would Z71's be way to harsh on city and hwy driving?Thank you! I need to figure out how to :search: . Please ignore my ignorence.

My personal opinion... if you're going to live up to the forum name you gave yourself, start looking for something stronger than a G80. Lunchbox lockers or a Detroit are where you should be headed.

Welcome, Z71 springs with give you the stiffness you want, I use them and it is not bad but if you need to soften them up just put a little weight (recovery gear, Tools) in the back. I haven't switched rear axle but shouldn't be too difficult. Same axle with G80 will swap without modification, but would suggest upgrading to 8.6 axle form EXT or a DANA 44 for more options as far as lockers go, if you just swap out for a stock axle w/G80 then all you can use is the G80.

Its a work in progress lol. But, I am not sure what I am going to go with... I was thinking about putting a G80 on and then upgrading later but that might not be the best idea... People say the stiff ride is horrible, I think there wrong well off to ebay lol

For what it's worth, I think my truck rides much better now (with z71 springs) than it did stock. But I also carry a bunch of weight.

With or without weight the ride is far better. IMO

Man, you guys are confusing me. I tow a boat a lot but dont carry any weight in the rear, from what I read I thought the concensus seems to be the Z71's suck without weight?? Ive had a pair sitting in my garage for about 2 months now cause I thought the ride would be terrible????

Try it out. Doesn't take much to swap the rear springs as you know. I don't mind the ride too much without much weight, but it does ride much better weighed down.

Brad, give it a try. A lot of people don't like the ride when it is empty. To me it is like my old pick-up when it was empty it was a little harsh but with added weight it smoothed out.

Good comparison on the Pick-Up. I''ll most likely throw them in soon just to give them a shot.

I picked up a set when they were cheap, tossed them on and had horrendous clunking noises over large bumps, but took them out cause i didn't want to break anything. Come to find out... Z71+marks 2.5" lift+oem shocks=horrid clunk, now that i have a set of procomps back there, I was going to put them back in and give it a test run over some bumps this weekend.

I like the Z71's, without weight I have no issues and with weight they are great.
It just seems more solid to me, nothing harsh about it.

The consensus your reading is made up of a bunch of peoples personal opinions. Not everyone has the same taste, and everyone's perception of what "harsh" or "firm" is can be completely different.

Myself, I like the firmer (some say Harsh) ride. But I grew up in log-trucks, dump trucks, equipment, and to me the ride is nothing compared to how Harsh those can be. Some people grew up in civics' or caddy's, their perception of Harsh is allot softer than mine.

Basically, you cannot expect someone else to tell you its going to be a "perfect ride" or its too "harsh" since your asking a question that is based solely on personal opinion.... Your going to have to find out for yourself. :thumleft:

With the screen name I would have to assume that you plan on using the TB way beyond most others.

I would look into a tb ss semi float 14 bolt rear axle with 4.10 gears, then throw in a ebay factory take out e-locker. Thats about the toughest rear setup you can get without a huge undertaking. Then throw in a matching front 4.10 diff with a lock-right.

As a few here have found out, rocks are really hard on TBs in factory form. (I skipped that step)
