Exterior Visual Difference between G80 and non?

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by DirtyBacon04 » Wed Dec 14, 2011 10:17 pm

Since i'm searching the local salvage yards and talking to "less than knowledgeable" people on the web, I was wondering if there was a visual difference with the axle that I could tell whether or not it was a G80. (I have the GU6 axle.)
For example. This is a GU6, is there a way by looking at this pic whether or not its a locker?

Or is there a way to identify it via the VIN?

Pull the cover. The yard should be letting you do this before purchase anyway.

If they won't let you pull the cover and look at the R&P, walk.

Thanks! Here's another question. Is the lockright an option for the rear axle? Would that be an easier choice than swapping out the entire axle (not that its too hard anyways)

Is the truck the axle came from there? if so just look in the glove box.
I believe the EATON gov-loc(G80) is the only locker available for the stock non-ext axle. If I'm wrong someone let me know.

Im searching online so, the vendor just posts the item and the VIN of the vehicle it came from. And i'm pretty sure your right about the EATON gov-loc.

You are correct! The G80 is the only locker for the 8" rear end.

Buy an EXT axle (8.6") WITHOUT a G80 and you can install a LR. They are aftermarket only.

How much stronger is the 8.6" w/ a LR than a 8" w/ a G80? Worth the investment, ya think? Sorry I'm asking so many questions here, just trying to learn up.

I think the LR is posi-traction I.E. it lets the outside wheel move faster in turns but is generally engaged and the G80 locks with wheel spin which is its flaw, if it engages under high pressure it can literally explode. LR is already engaged so it does not have this weakness. If I'm correct...

Hmmm, sounds like a worth while investment to me. I'll look into doing it once i move back to the east coast. Do you know of anyone on here who as already done this, or will I be the first?

I blew a hole in the case of my 8" G80 on a black diamond trail. The 8.6 with a No-Slip (a LR with synchros, made by the same people) walked over the same rock.

Having the wheels start out locked instead of waiting for a wheel to spin before the diff locks is HUGE. You don't realize how big a deal that is until you've experienced both.

I got way more aggressive with my truck after I put the lockers in... because I could.
