Time for new tires.. 255 or 265?

Winter is almost here, and I don't feel too confident running the worn stock tires that are on it now. So I am pondering what would be a better move, 255/75-17 (32.2") or 265/70-17 ( 32.25"). I see a lot of guys going both routes, do some fancy the slightly larger width than the other?

They will be going on a set of 17x8" rims, ( still trying to decide on a set of steels or something more tasteful). They will see salty winter roads so I am torn on that.

I know a lift and spacers are required.

Honestly, I doubt you're going to see any difference between the tires. It's 10mm.

Personally, I like my 255s, and they have treated me incredibly well.

I guess it all depends on what you want to do.
I don't do a lot of snow driving so I can't help you there. I would think the wider the tire the better the traction.
I run the 255/70/16 and they work for what I do but I plan to move to a 265/75/16 next.
It gives me a little wider footprint for beach sand and will give me a little taller tire as well.
That size is also pretty popular if I get in a bind and can't wait for a tire to come in special order.
BTW, I think the math on that 265/70/17 works out to 31.61 unless you have picked a tire that comes out at that height.

I went with a 265 personally. Narrower is suppose to be better in the snow, but like James said, it's half an inch. You'll find a lot of tires with a good snow traction rating in both sizes. Even the treadwrights are supposed to be good in the snow according to the jeep guys.

Depends on the depth of the snow. Narrower tires will get you high centered quicker in deep snow.


Regardless, the difference between 255s and 265s isn't noticeable.

We get quite a bit of snow up here, to the point where going on the trails would be almost stupid and guaranteed to get stuck somewhere. Only passable trails are for (sleds/ snowmobiles/ snowmachines) which ever you call them. I never got stuck on public roads last winter with a 2-3' snow falls at a time, in fact laughed when I was passing people up hill who couldn't get anywhere.

Summer time, we have a lot of trails up here but are mainly dominated by the Jeep guys. I want to do some playing but nothing where I will abuse my truck.

I'm hemmin and hawing between the Treadwrights and the BFG Destination M/T's. I saw a few occasions where the Guard Dogs weren't cleaning themselves out after some clay/ water mixtures which is pretty much what we have here in NY.

Get some 35" GuardDogs and snow, trails and compact cars will not get in your way... :poke:
