New Thumbnail Code

I noticed some of you guys like posting thumbnails instead of resized photos in your trip reports.

So to make it easier on you, we now have the "Thumbnail" code.

Its very simple, and can be used with any sized photo, but should be used with large photos.

Simply type the following:

Yes, right clicking always works. We've been trying to avoid that step though by allowing 'external' links to automatically open a new window/tab.

Ahh, are you uploading your images when you post? This is strictly for linking to images that are already hosted somewhere else on the web.

Would highly recommend FREE image hosting at sites like photobucket, flickr, freeimagehosting.net, etc.

Agreed. Using the "Attach" feature should generally be reserved for those rare occasions that you don't have access to your image host.

OK so I'm stupid. I don't understand and I'm afraid that I will abuse a feature I don't know how to use properly. Truth is, sense finding the os I've learned a lot. But still don't get some of the stuff you guys talk about in regards to computers. Hell, just two days ago James told me about Google search. It took awhile but I learned about preferences too.

Photobucket.com is like an online photo album.

The first step is to create an account there. Then upload images. Here's a tutorial: http://tutorials.photobucket.com/tutorial_188.html

Once your photos are uploaded, you have to find their image address, or URL. Here's a tutorial to help with that: http://tutorials.photobucket.com/tutorial_150.html

Once you copy the image's "URL", you can place it between either a [IMG] tag, or a [Thumbnail] tag to display the photo in your post. IMG posts a picture without resizing it. Thumbnail posts a small, resized picture, with a link to the full size.

If you are using the photobucket thumbnail code, you don't need to use the [thumbnail] tag here. The photobucket code does essentially the same thing.

So you pull the stock image at full size but use the thumb nail here so when it comes up it's pic only?

Yes. If you put the fullsize image URL in the [thumbnail] tags, it will produce a small image and link to the image only, instead of the photobucket site.

Yes. If you put the fullsize image URL in the [thumbnail] tags, it will produce a small image and link to the image only, instead of the photobucket site.

However, if I am understanding correctly, if I have a post that has, lets say, 30 images where each large one hosted at Photobucket is 1280x1024 pixels and 300 kb, then when viewers load the post they will be downloading approx. 9 MB of images (30 x 300 KB). That is, ALL the large images will fully load in the post, and when you click on them, they will display in a new window.

But if you use the [url] code in the traditional way and use the thumbnails that sit on Photobucket, then when the post loads only 0.25 MB of images will download (30 x 8 KB). The large image (300 KB) loads only when you click on it.

This is just an FYI so that members know that creating a post with lots of [thumbnail] calls will take much longer to load than one with actual thumbnails in it.

The [thumbnail] tags were meant more for those of us that don't use photobucket.
