the transfer case sometimes..."slams" into gear...is this normal or is the transfer case actuator crapping out? many thanx

Not sure what would make it slam, but it doesn't sound normal.

Coasting between 3-5 mph...sometimes if I'm in a jam I'll switch it over from a dead stop

What are you switching from/to. You're not switching to LO while coasting are you? If I recall, LO will give a slight jolt sometimes.

Pretty sure mine won't even lock into 4LO while moving. It will blink for a few seconds, then go back to 2. 4AUTO and 4HI I can switch while going 5 or under. I've always come to a complete stop and dropped it into neutral before shifting to 4LO though, and it still gives a little jolt.

I just bought it with 92K on it...it was a previous dealership loaner car and they did all the required maintenance at 75K

It like taking a manual trans car, coasting with the engine shut off then jamming it into gear without the clutch...
Yes its going to jolt. Stop before shifting into 4lo and everything will be ok.

You have to be stopped and in neutral or park in order for 4lo to engage... If you're not, the TCCM shouldnt even let the TC try 4lo...

my owners manual says to be in neutral when shifting into 4Lo but best case is to be moving slowly while in neutral to switch to 4lo.

The 2004 shop manual says 5 kph / 3 mph. Just looked it up because I was starting to misremember the exact number. I use stopped, though. A slow movement sometimes assists the splined disconnect engagement, though, when you go 2HI->4HI.
