Travel and wheeling...How far???

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by HARDTRAILZ » Fri Sep 03, 2010 3:05 pm

Since we all drive our rigs and don't tow them, distance and travel come into play.

How far are you willing to to drive to wheel? How far have you gone to wheel? How close to you is a place to wheel...legally? Do you travel alone, with other rigs, to meet other rigs or just fly solo?

Anything else someone wants to add...Do it.

I think this could be a good discussion, some of us want hard obstacles and tough wheeling, some of us want to overland, some of us just want to cruise dirt roads, some of us never really get dirty but want the capablility to... Just wonder what people have done or may be willing to do...

For me...

I would drive anywhere. I would drive to South America if it wasn't for time constraints and funding. I would love to drive through all 49 states and wheel as many as possible. However as of now, with life as it is, I honestly could probably not make more than a 1000 mile trip each way to a wheeling destination. It would need to be a well planned trip and would eliminate some trips before or after, but I think it would be worth it for the right destination.

I would have to say the nearly 600 miles each way to VA for Tecore is the farthest i have travelled to wheel. I am hoping to do it again soon! I have a ton of places within 2-300 miles i need to visit as well. TN was the best wheeling I have done. It was amazing being up in the mountains on trails that tough.

I have personal land and the Badlands about 75 miles away. In opposite directions though. I have Haspin and Redbird not much further. They are both offroad parks, but not as good as Badlands.

I generally travel with a group, but sometimes alone to meet with people. I feel ok going solo to my personal land, but no where else. I am sure i could find people at an offroad park, but I prefer to go with or meet people I know and trust.

The wife and I are still planning the big trip next year. Will be a solo vehicle, two person trip with likely over 6k total miles - no idea how many will be off-road. Planning a few destinations so far - mosty Colorado and Utah so far. Planning to hit mainly scenic trails, but there will be some challenges thrown in there too. Gonna have to take all of my vacation time from work at once. Should be totally worth it though.

The most I've done so far is about 300 miles each way to a wheeling spot near my bro-in-law's place.

I do think that generally as the distance increases from home, the less willing I am to try harder stuff, and the more worried I am about coming back in one piece.

Good idea for a thread Kyle, might even help a few of us meet each other too!

I wouldn't mind taking a drive, but if i can swing TECORE it might be my breaking point. Even though Jersey isn't a huge state, what a lot of people don't understand is how congested we are for the most part, and especially where i live. For example when i went to Penn State, in PA a 60mile trip is 45 min ride isn't bad but in NJ those same 60miles will take close to an hr and half if not more and the ride is a PITA cause your ALWAYS going to hit traffic and some type of construction.

There is not a whole lot of locations within 2hrs of me. Theres a few little trails here and there but there's a nice park in PA called Raush Creek (http://www.rc4x4.org) which im a member of too but i haven't really had the time to get out there. I was supposed to go a few months ago but unfortunately i crashed the day before i was going so i was never been able to make it there. They have some good trails everything from stock passable to competition rock crawling-both natural and man made. They also host many events including RCROC so that shows you how good of a park this place is. I would definitely be interested in setting up a trip out there if anyone has any interest

RC is cool, gives you a chance to test things without ever being too far from pavement.

My membership expired, I wanted to go again this summer but it wasn't in the cards. Maybe this winter.

RC is 600 miles from me, but only 50 from Carlisle. I may have to make Carlisle a week long trip and hit Hershey and RC.

My buddy went there a few weeks ago and we have been talking about going back. He said it was good for a park, pretty near badlands style, but more rock. Cross between Badlands and Windrock. We talked about going this spring since his wife is from Hershey area. will let ya'll know if something come up, but he likes the really tough shit. 35's soon to be 38's on a rubi all poisoned spidered up and he is not afraid of body damage.

I had an amazing drive from Tronto Ontario, back home to Cali and hit the trails with TheRoadie. The second highlight was my day at the Jack Daniels distillery.

Just about everything is a distance from where I'm at. I am still looking for a reasonable trail nearby that I can hit on a day over the weekend but just not finding any.

I am looking into http://www.bh4wheelers.com/ for their Dakota Territory Challenge next year. It's on a lotto system for enterants if they get too many so I'll put in and see how it goes so I can rep our platform there. I plan on a few more mods before hitting it and look forward to seeing what they have.

I have thought about traveling to Moab in Utah as it's within driving distance for a week run there and back. I may have to hit up the Forrest Service in my area and see if they have anything that's not just for 4-wheelers and motor cycles available.

I drove up to Lincoln Montana and based myself out of Greatfalls Montana a few weeks ago looking for some roads, but most where either under construction or closed just out of sight of the turn off. I did find a nice 2 hour drive up the mountainside that wasn't closed yet. Total driving distance for that trip was 700 miles one direction from home.

So I'd say probably the distance I can/would travel right now is within a neighboring state's distance.

1800 miles one-way to Ellington, MO for MORA (Missouri Off Road Adventure) 2009. Epic. I don't wanna talk about it.

I am looking at least an average 120 to 300 miles to go wheeling .
Sad thing is i see more custom 4x4's here than anything and no clubs or dirty trucks .
Ill be in Arizona this November so ill get to wheel then .

Where?

Farthest I've done so far is like 30 miles out to Mayer, that was back when I was new into this and looking for easy roads. That was South/SE. North, Drake, which is also some 20-30 miles.

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where there's a lot of mountain roads ranging from Prius-rated to "not even my 37s will fit", as a local mechanic said (he has a fully built 4Runner with 37" MT/Rs. And I probably have enough roads to explore at least till I graduate. Because a lot of the nearby roads are more challenging than the ones far away, now that I've got the lift, and a friend with a Toyota truck, now we run more difficult roads and do it together.

But then it also depends on what we're doing. If it's just a daytrip or if we're camping (and that also determines the location -I'd be much more willing to camp in the Chino Valley district of Prescott NF than in the Bradshaw district).

Most of the time I used to run with a single vehicle, sometimes alone, and sometimes with friends. But I never took moderate-difficult trails alone.

Farthest I'd be willing to go? Panama, but I wouldn't take my TB.

What I've been planning for sometime is to head down to Phoenix on dirt. That means driving to Mayer on pavement, then dirt all the way to Black Canyon City, then jump onto I-17 for the last 25-30 miles of pavement.
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Longest overland trip was last year Toronto - Idaho - Nevada - Utah - Toronto ... and all points in between.

18 days, 11,050 km - read about it here or here.

I would go further in a heartbeat if I had the resources (read: money).

There are a couple little trails about 5-10 miles from my home. I've tried 1 so far almost getting stuck in a deep rut due to my stock height. The other I'm still debating if its even made for trucks or if its an atv trail, its kinda tight and don't look like there's very much room to turn around if I run into an obstacle I can't tackle. When I get my lift on, next spring, I will for sure make a trip out to RC to see what I can do. Then, I'm on board for next years TECORE!

Tecore is pretty stock friendly, but you will also have a great collective to help you through anything you need.

Thats what it seems like. I have been reading up on the past TECORE's and they don't seem too bad at all. More hill climbs, rocky paths, and creeks to cross than mud. I have beatin Henry(name of trailblazer) up pretty good on some old off road paths, but he doesn't like mud too much. Maybe its my lack of experience driving off road. Thats why I need to get out there with some of you guys so I can learn the ropes! All I need is a CB and the liftmeister and I am ready.

Nearest wheeling is approximately 5 miles away, and provides for a good hour or so of wheeling if I take it slow, found another spot maybe 15 miles away that is good for maybe 2 hours of wheeling, and the furthest I've been so far is Anza Borrego to meet up with Roadie, Nick, and Teebes, maybe 200 miles or so round trip. ORTB WCE should be the furthest thus far, at around 500-600 miles round trip. Should be fun though!

Our longest trip for off-roading while actually driving the off-road rigs was Moab, Utah from Louisville, Kentucky.

Mapquest puts that at 1465 miles one way, so with wheeling included over 3200 miles round trip.

Trailering? Wherever we can afford to go. In the past year or so I've been to Disney, OK, Seymour, MO, and a number of places closer in around Kentucky and Indiana (and I don't even have a running vehicle -- I've been borrowing rides!).

In the upcoming year we'll be at Harlan in Kentucky, Badlands in Indiana, probably Disney Oklahoma, perhaps Moab again, and perhaps Denver Colorado, plus the regular close in runs.
