Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Fuel Pump Question

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by rgraboske » Sat Sep 11, 2010 6:41 pm

This is a t/j of Hardtrailz question about gas tank baffles.

Has anyone had to replace their fuel pump yet? Mine is still original, and from the beginning I fill it up full, and run it low before refilling it. I know there's something to be said for not doing it this way, but with the smaller tank on the '02, I fill up a lot.

Anyway, I've noticed a few times lately that it's taking a little longer to start than normal. The fuel filter is less than 8,000 miles old, and the spark plugs, etc all have less than 50,000 miles, and will be replaced soon anyway as I'm coming up to 150K miles which means replacing all fluids and tune up parts.

Anyone had to replace their fuel pump yet?

90K on mine. I have a 2002 and microscopic fuel tank like yours. So far so good.

2005 120,000kms - ish. My only issue was the tank level sensor went bad.....and the dealership replaced it for me. That was around hmmmm 80,000kms - ish. This failure is actual quite common.

Yeah my fuel level sender decided it was going to do what it wants at around 65k mi and I'm at about 70k now on my 05.

I have heard of some people over on the other forum saying they changed theirs as a "preventative maintenance" kind of thing. One memeber I believe said they did it at 180k miles. I don't think there is any real way to test and see if a fuel pump is losing its poop. If your worried about it taking longer to start, turn the key to the run position and wait a few seconds before cranking the motor and see if there is any difference. That'll give the pump time to pressurize the fuel system.

You know i noticed mine is bit harder to start sometimes. I bet my pump is going. I need to do some research on changing it i guess, but I got a couple other things to do first.

I am at 220,000 miles, and similar to Kyle I am having loss of power issues on steep inclines. I am experiencing longer start times, as well as needing more of a warm up time before I can jump in and take off.

You should be able to do a fuel pressure test to see if your lossing any pressure. Its very simple if you have a fuel pressure gauge..

Thats' great advise for hardtrails, I would do it both on level ground and on a similar incline that you have experianced problems with. But that's just my .02

The scangauge may or may not be able to see fuel pressure in semi-real time, in the cab, if that helps you...
