Differential disassembling

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

by Glennsr » Sun Sep 05, 2010 3:37 pm

I have a 2007 TB, but I also have a 1995 Tahoe I'm working on.
I followed the instructions for taking apart the G80 which looks exactly the same EXCEPT I don't holes to knock out the govenor parts.
Can anyone help?

Which G80 are you trying to dissassemble? the one on the TB or the Tahoe?
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

I believe your carrier can actually be split apart. Ours cannot, which is why we have the removal holes. Look for some additional bolts flushed into the side of your carrier. Once you get it apart, the governor parts should just fall out.

The differential is out of the 1995 Tahoe. And I couldn't find a way to split it to get the Govenor parts out, And I can't get the gears out with out taking the govenor parts out.

There appears to be 3 different sizes... different designs for each.

8.5"

9.5"

10.5"

For the 8.5" and 9.5", it looks like there are bushings that hold it in, like ours. Can you pry on them? Can you take pictures of your carrier? It may help us.

I have the 8-1/2". It does have the bushings that hold in the govanor parts. I don't have much to pry on so I notched out the anvil on a C-Clamp to fit under the bushing. I had a couple cheap 3" c-clamps, those broke. I now have a good 4" clamp that I notched out the anvil. I thightened this as tight as I could by hand, then added some heat with a propane torch. No movement. I'm afraid to put a pipe on the clamp handle but I may have to and hope I don't break the bushings. I'm assuming the bushings are pressed in cause I can't see any clips or anyting holding them. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx

When I originally changed out my governor assembly with the carrier still in the housing, I used a 7mm wrench placed on the shaft of the governor against the bushing. I put a punch on that and hit it with a 3lb sledge a few times and it worked it's way out. You may be able to try something similar with the carrier in a vise. I suspect the bushings need some shock to move rather than just compression. I know my weight was especially hard to remove the first time.

Pics of the carrier from a few angles would be grand. My new 8.5/8.6 is an open carrier, so I have no point of reference.

Can you flip the carrier over and take a pic from the other side, with the ring gear facing down?

Also, looks like you have a chip out of one of your spider gears. You'll want to address that if you didn't already notice that.

OK.. Got it apart. The Shock & Awe worked. I used my notched C-Clamp and tightened it up and hit it with a hammer. The weight was harder to get out on mine too.
Yes,the gears are chipped that was what I was changing.
Thanx much, but stay tuned I'm not done yet.
