TRAIL RIDE LENGTH

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by TBT012281 » Tue Jul 06, 2010 2:58 pm

Yes I am a noobie, but I did try the search function before posting this. I was wondering how long a typical trail ride is mile wise? I am planning a trip for early October for the weekend and dont want to run all 20 miles of trail in one day. I know it is sometimes slow going, but about how long would it take to run that distance typicaly? On the difficulty scale 1-10 the trails are rated 3-8.

Theres no 'limit' to how long of a trail you hit. Just make sure your vehicle is equipped properly to handle the demands that these higher ranked trails will require. Make sure you have enough fuel, as well as recovery equipment to get you through. Also, dont go alone.

Prepare for the absolute worst possible situation and youl be good. 20 miles is do-able

Depending on the route, we averaged about 5-6 mph on one of the harder trails during TECORE... that's mostly 1st gear LO.

So even at that speed, you're talking about 4 hours max on the trail.

That wasn't an "8" trail, though...

For instance, some of the stuff I went on with my sister in her "nothing stock" Jeep and her friends in SOCAL would take us a full day to do 3 miles...

It really does depend on what kind of trail it is...

He's not doing an 8 on that scale either... no TB is.

The off road trail scales seem to differ wildly between parks/etc.

Care to share where exactly you'll be traveling and what the scale is based on?

The Uwharrie national forest is where I plan to head, its the only trails in the area I know of near Raleigh NC. The rating scale was based on what I read at the website I would not begin to assume where they came up with that rating. it also said that every obstacle that you come across had multiple ways around so there was no worry about trying to take on something wild when im only mild. only reason for that time of year is that as of now I'm mostly stock and need time to get the mods done like I want them.

If you going to just be hitting go-arounds and bypasses whats the point in even heading out?

not gonna bypass them unless its one of those that I know better than trying...one of the 8's on the scale as they list it. I would love to think I would not have to bypass any of them, but I dont know how difficult the trails truly are as I have never been on them

I've seen photographs from Uwharrie, they offer a good amount of varied terrain.

Here's a link to some:

Also, you may want to contact them and make sure the off road park is still open. There was talk of the USFS closing the park due to erosion issues.

I think my slowest pace solo was 90 minutes for 1/2 mile of pure hell rocks. Hikers were passing me and giggling. Lots of rock stacking and drama and roof rack repairs. Teebes and I got stuck on one 100 yard section of the Rubicon for an hour with two extractions each. In the desert, we typically do 50-80 miles sans pavement in a day. But stock - best advice is to not go solo.

Bill and I covered a lot of ground during our Borrega trip. I wouldnt look at as how much time it will take to go the distance but how much time you have to enjoy your truck, and just be out in nature. :friday:

I covered 4.1 miles in about 3.5 hours on Poland Junction Rd.

Check the USGS topos, if it's an unpaved road (a double line I believe) you will be fine, anything with a double dashed line is a maybe, as those roads (in my experience) go from doable in a Cadillac STS to a barely-stock-doable Poland Junction Rd (check my post from April), and anything that's single dashed or "Jeep Trail"... leave it for the roadie or teebees.
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

once again you guys have offered some great advice, I plan to wait until the lift is done and a few other mods have been completed before I attempt any trails. I'll post pics as progress is made

Indeed, I think we covered close to 90 miles that one day around Thanksgiving last year... gotta get out there again, once I can get you and teebes in on it, though I have discovered the wonders of wheeling in Ojai recently. For wheeling day trips, I just figure out a halfway point and turn around once I'm there... So if I have 6 hours to wheel, I drive out for 3 hours, then drive back. I figure that keeps me pretty safe.

I'd love to find a nice long trail, 3-5 scale, just for a nice scenic drive through the woods
