Compressor -- What do have and what do think of it?

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by HARDTRAILZ » Wed Apr 28, 2010 10:44 am

I have had a cheap-o lil black box compressor that plugs in the cig lighter and amazingly it has done a decent job over the years. Although, whenever possible i try not to use it if a gas station or better compressor is around. I never have used it to fill all four tires after airing down. Either use the comprosser on my buddy's winch, one at the wheeling area, or the farm or home one. But it has helped with low tires and refilling after removing something and plugging a tire.

Now...I have decided i really want something better and potetially something to use for on-board air or at least just hard-mounted and wired to a switch.

I was set on the MV-50, but have found that there some differences in the MV-50 and the MF-1050 or newer MF-1052. I cant seem to figure out if the differences are enough to warrant picking one over the other.

I also was looking at....

Anything else I should be looking at? I know the mv-50 works. i used to have one, but it is long gone. I am ordering something this week, so please post up.

I've seen the MV-50 in action at TECORE 2. JD used it to fill up all four of his tires, then used it on another truck for all 4 right after. 5 minutes later, we used it on 2 more trucks. It got pretty hot after, but it worked like a charm. I'm sure JD has used it since, so it lasts...

$53 shipped on ebay if you look around. I am leaning that way, I had one and know they work, but want to see if there is another compressor to check out first.

My buddy has the high output ARB one mounted up and it is fantastic, but more money than I want to drop.

MV50 FTW. It's the backup for my Powertank, but I use it to save $4 worth of CO2 if I have the time to spare.

Mv50 ftw. :Iagree: I love mine and have used several times. Just fire it up before attaching to tire.

Little spendy, but I like the Viair 450C... It's 100% duty cycle, with .97CFM@100PSI.. Put one in my co-workers rig, and we use it all the time at our mining claims, at times, that thing is running non stop filling tires, inner-tubes, air bags for floating bolders. It doesn't get too hot, and hasn't failed after hours upon hours of use.

I wouldn't go with the slime one, it looks cool in grey with green, but it's a 15amp one, so you can plug it in to the cigarette plug, and shouldn't be as powerful. The MV50 says max 30 amps, and you connect it straight to the battery.

I did pick up a cig plug adaptor for the trailer wiring yesterday. Thought it may come in handy.

The slime one seems to be closer to the mf 1040.

+1 on the MV-50. Hard to beat if you're on a budget.

The cig plug ones suck, don't waste your money.

Seems it will be the mv-50 or its siblings.

I keep wondering about a small tank underneath since I have all the room from the spare.

Does anyone have a compressor mounted other than teebes?

I looked into mounting a 5 gal where the spare was... it's really iffy. I don't feel like there's enough space. But you may be able to shoehorn something in there if you cut enough away.

I was thinking of making a mount plate under the hood for the compressor to keep it safe and then a small cynlinder tank in the rear about 8 inch diameter from frame rail to frame rail long, or even two of them tied together.

Do we even have that space under the hood? I mean the Land Cruiser and Hiluxes have space for a compressor and a 2nd battery, but ours feels kinda cramped.

For JK's they have a mount that shares the mount for the brake master cylinder and puts the compressor on a plate right next to the bmc. It works quite well and I will look into something like that once i pick one up.

There ought to be room or at least I hope.

My Denali has the stock Air Springs and Compressor, which we all know is an overheating pile of worthless noise... I've got my BDS and Z71s sitting in their boxes until I have a free weekend to do the install, but I was looking at Air Lift 1000 bags also. My plan was to replace the stock compressor with the Air Lift Leveling Fill Station. Compressor with 2g tank mounted under the rear, and the Panel Assembly and connection for the Aux line run up to the stock Aux location (passenger side panel in the rear with storage for the hose). At the $350 price I found on the kit, I've got quite a few other mods I want done first (wheels/tires, protection, recovery).

Any idea what the GB prices actually are? He's saying to PM for price, just wondering if someone here has... I've probably got a good 6 months before I look into this seriously though.

also pay attention that only some of those compressors have a 100% duty cycle.
