Unsure about other states but in most NC counties, 1996+ vehicles have to pass the OBDII check.
I wouldn't expect the 4BT swap to pass inspection here.

It varies from state to state. We require smog checks too in certain counties, years 92+, but only in and around Atlanta (dammit).

For Georgia, any vehicle with a diesel conversion can be legally operated as long as it's certified as a diesel by a state representative of the DOT. Essentially: "yup it's a diesel engine. yup it drives". Hand you a slip of paper, walk to the tag office, give them the slip, they reissue your title as a diesel. No inspections afterwards.

It's really a win/win for me. Get the mpg and performance of the diesel, no smog checks afterwards, I get a project to work on, and I get to hear the turbo spools.

After living in draconian NY and VA, it's refreshing to live in a state where they just don't care. Although....they do use that as an excuse to run roadblock checkpoints on occasion to cite for seat belt, brakes, lights, bald tires, etc. But they don't care about resonator delete, no cats on the GXP, or the extra lights all over the truck. It's nice, and one of the few things that makes Florida bearable.

That's CO also, lol, if you live in one of the 5 counties in the metro area, the emissions places frown upon the no cats, just go get a P.O box in a county with no emissions, problem solved. Or drive by the roadside testing vans 3 times.

There was a quote on one of the CO offroad forums I read which described the law for a "road safe vehicle" in CO, as long as it has headlights, tail lights, blinkers and seat belts, it can be licensed for on road use.

Diesel here is just about the same, diesel cert, reissue title, no more emissions.

I thought kingbird swapped a 4.2 to the 5.3 and converted it to 4wd? Am I mistaken? Must have been reading posts drunk as hell again..

I believe he has a Bravada that is 4x4 swapped.
