7.2" Torsen type front diff LSD

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

Chris Peters came across a post for a 7.2" Torsen type front diff LSD over on TBSSOWNERS and SYTY.net. From what I have read these are real units that we can buy today. I email Aaron Aaronptimm@Yahoo.com and asked him to join here to add some information.

Sweet! Do we know what the torque/Bias is?\

I found it here, http://usdm.teammfactory.com/helical-lsd_1040 No idea on anything else though.

I received this in response to an email I sent last night,

JR,
Hi this is John Frey from Bully Racing.... I am the guy that got these made. I could get lockers made but there would have to be a minimum order of 10 paid up front and to be honest I don't think it I would sell enough of them to make it worth while.

The Ford Raptor and H1 hummer both use Torsen type front LSDs and no it is not adjustable.

You can call me if you have any questions.

Thanks,
John

I should clarify what John meant in the email. We currently have Torsen front carriers in Stock and available for the trailblazer front differentials. These are limited slip units and are what is currently used in the Ford raptors. These are an excellent limited slip unit that would be an excellent upgrade.

If you were wanting to get a different style of locker (metal plate lsd) we could get that made as well but it would require 10 units to be made and paid for up front.

Imo, a torrent front diff isn't going to make a fast in a hurricanes difference offroad.

But I'd like to see someone prove me wrong, since it's unlikely we'll ever get anything else.

About the only time it won't make a difference is if you've got one wheel in the air and don't know to drag the brake a little, to give it some torque and use that X:1 bias ratio. (Well, 2.5:1 to 6:1. I'll call them when they open this morning, and ask them what the bias ratio of their torsen is, for our application)
ETA: It appears that their max bias ratio is in the 3:1 range: http://support.teammfactory.com/support ... ential-faq

That's not really out of line, though. A lot of the Eaton Truetrac units are in the $400-$500 range, and those are for common, high qty. applications.

Is it better than an open diff? Sure, of course, anything is. Is it what I want? No, not even close. Will it ever give a true 50/50 torque split? Only when both wheels have the same traction. Is it what I want? Nope, not at all.

IMO, since an actual locker, that will provide a 50/50 split, that will outperform this every time, period, was only 400 bucks, an inferior product is a no go for me.

I'm not paying 700 dollars, for a compromise of what I want, and going through all trouble of tearing the front chunk out to install something that is a pale shadow of what I want, no thanks. My Dana 60 Spartan locker was 330 bucks.

But, that's my opinion. I'd like to see someone try it, I'd like to see vid. I'm also of the opinion that the rear G80 is worthless too, and plenty of people here are happy with theirs, so opinions are worth what you pay for them

Agreed, these were built for the SS folks. They need good traction on asphalt so they can launch.

I'd pay $700 for a locker, but I shy away from an LSD at that price. Partially because it's not really what I need, but mostly because I don't have $700.

Haha

I chose the cut it out and set it by the curb route, but I bet welding would work well with a stock style disconnect.

I would think the LSD in the front might be better in some situations. I think about having one wheel in the air spinning and if it comes down too hard with a locker something is going to break. I would think the LSD would be more forgiving.

Due to a screw up with a junkyard in Ohio, I ended up with the lockrite in the front and the LSD in the rear. I wish it were the other way around.

The lockrite up front is a little noisy but it doesn't bother me.
