Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

What did you do to your GMT today?

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by BC backroader » Wed Feb 24, 2016 11:07 pm

Ordered a set of Motomaster AT2s in 245/70/17, since they were on sale at $142.95 ea.

I should have them early next week. I also have a local shop checking around to see what they can find for me in 17x8 black/machined wheels with about 4" backspace to mount them on. I'll post pics when it's all mounted.

Neat!! Why not go up at least one size, my frozen friend?

I just ordered a thermostat for my transmission. Also, might start looking for a bigger cooler. The xmsn got a bit too hot for my liking on the last trans-con drive. Also, my US Powertrain AWD disco came in! That'll be going in maybe tomorrow morning before work. I'll most likely rebuild the old one and keep it as a spare. Or maybe i'll sell it. IDK yet.

DirtyBacon04, I did go up 1 size, from 245/65/17, to 245/70/17. The tires on sale do not come in 255/70/17, which is 2 sizes up, but might have fit on the stock rims, though I'd have to check fit before buying at that size.

Though I live in Canada, AKA the Great White North, I'm not frozen, since my little corner of the country is in the path of the Japanese Current in the Pacific, which brings us nice warm air from Hawaii, along with LOTS of rain. Total snowfall in the Fraser Valley this winter is less than an inch, though the ski hills in the mountains bordering the valley have about 20 feet of snow. Today's temp hit 13C, which is about 53F, and we haven't had overnight frost since before Christmas. The down side of living in the nicest climate in the country is the cost of owning a home, as it's higher here than anywhere else in Canada. In the city of Vancouver, a 40 year old 3 BR bungalow will set you back $1.2 million; out in the valley, where I live, the same thing is still about $500,000. :-(

Sure, I can go with "Frozen friend", I'm happy to be your friend whatever you call me, Florida boy. :-)

Florida:
Gators, panthers, cottonmouths, hurricanes, and flood of Canadian "Snowbirds" every winter.

B.C.:
Grizzlies, cougars, timber rattlers, earthquakes, and a flood of American "Y'alls" every summer.

Yea... the snowbirds are no joke. Especially where I work. I have to imagine the Canadians have never seen a roundabout before. Mind = BLOWN

Do you guy's with the 4.2 really have trans temp issues so badly? Mine sat at 188 for so long, I actually hooked a gauge into the pan to make sure, it never moves lol.

It is not the 4.2 that is the issue it is the different torque converters in the transmission from what I understand. if you get yours rebuilt it would make sense to swap in the TC from the 5.3l because it produces less heat.

Do you guys run in 4Low often on your trips? This will help get the torque converter out of the stall condition and greatly reduce heat buildup in the converter. Or are you guys seeing high temps on normal driving or higher speed trail riding?

I dont see high temps on trail at all. It is twisties in the hill country. Well was until I tossed the extra cooler on.

I pretty well always wheel in 4-lo though. I would remove 4-Hi option and not really sweat it. Barely ever engage it unless just being nice to a wet yard or popping a stuck trailer out of the mud. 2wd or 4-LO is all I really need or use.
