Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Now it's time to order Tires!

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by Mooseknuckle » Mon Mar 22, 2010 7:15 pm

I have everything for the lift and now it is time to order Tires. I would like to have a MT that is some what decent in the rain as I know most are not due to siping. BFG m/t km,BFG m/t km2, pro-comp xtreme m/t & Kumho m/t kl71. I went to pick up my bds lift kit from a place near where I live in NJ and the owner said that the Kumho's are all everyone is asking about. I think he was just trying to sell them. I researched for five long days all over the internet, these four (especially BFG m/t km's ) were the ones people kept coming back to. I was originally looking at the trxus m/t until I heard about everyone having balancing issues to the point of changing the tire. Let me know what you all think ..thanks

BFG are tride and true... best made best lasting performance tires, I've had 3 sets and all of them have worn well and provided great traction. The KM2's are truely a great tire and i most likely will be ordering a set for my next tires.

I've had my BFG MTs for a year now.... they have been great in all kind of conditions here in NJ. They are wearing very well. I've rotated them twice since getting them. I've got about 15k on them and I have plenty of tread left. I've got 5 so that I can do a 5 tire rotation.

Kumhos are directional, so no side-to-side rotation... other than that, I also hear they're loud (if you care) and the wear isn't supposed to be that great. Someone here has them, and they can tell you about them
Image

BFG MT's (old style) are becoming harder to find, IMO, unless of course you go with that one size that is OEM on the Jeep Rubicon.
Image

KM2's are promising-looking, but I'm not sure how they'd hold up to the rain... no siping really, and the tread block looks like it'd be pretty poor against hydroplaning.
Image

Bill ran the Procomp Xtreme M/t's, so he can let you know how they were on the road and off, I believe they are made by Cooper Tires. I plan on going with these or Cooper Discoverer STT's next time I get tires, as the rain handling is important to me as well. I also like the side lugs and the tread.

Another possibility could be Firestone Destination M/T's, which I hear divided reviews on in regards to wet performance. Supposedly the different compound makes them better in the rain. No siping whatsoever, though.
Image

Maxxis Bighorn Radials could also work for you... They've been tried and true for many people in the expedition world.
Image

Another tire to look out for is the Nitto Trail Grappler and/or Mud Grappler. These tires are super expensive unless you have a hookup usually, but they are supposed to be pretty good, the Mud Grappler has siping, and the Trail Grappler is a nice hybrid AT/MT, leaning very heavily towards MUD. Size availability isn't that great, though I heard from a Nitto rep that they're releasing the Trail Grappler in 285/75/16 later this year. Then again, you're also in Toyo Open Country M/T territory at this price range. Just some more food for thought.

Ditto on the BFG KM1... I found the rubicon version 40k miles ago and have been really happy. I wholly expect these tires to last to 60k miles if not more.

Another good tire to check out is the Toyo Open Country MT. I've heard great things about them and is certainly on my list of prospects for a future tire along with the BFG KM2.

Personally dislike the mtr...any version. Love the BFG, Am truly impressed with my pro comps. But truly just pick what you want. You will drive them and your experience may be different than anyone else's. It is like what psi to run, everyone has a different number they like. I would rather run 20 psi everyday than ever run over 40 without 5000 lbs being towed. But several people on here are running well over that.

You will get a ton of opinions with varying levels of actual experience with mud tires. I have ran a couple dozen sets of mt's and my next set will be swampers. I just want the all out performance even if they only last 30,000 miles.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

Yep. 60,000 miles of life out of tires that can't take you anyplace interesting is just 60,000 useless pavement miles of nothing special. 20,000 miles out of a $1000 set of tires that can climb Lion's Back is still only a nickel a mile. Priceless.

I mean - what's FUEL cost you nowadays? A quarter a mile?

LOL! Thanks guys. I'm going with the Pro-Comps. It would be nice if they had the three for one going. I want to get them now while I have the money.

Sweet just ordered the pro-comp xtreme mud terrains and I got the 100% no questions asked warranty. be here in friday or saturday. I guess it's for another thread but the first week of april is lift time. I have a friend coming over to help and my neighbor is lending me his air compressor and air tools. What we should do is people that want to lift people in that area bust over and whip it out maybe have some kinda point system or get a gift or something...hmmm sorry just thinkin out loud...anyway I'm excited.

I just put the Maxxis Bighorns on mine, they really are a nice tire so far. Not to loud on the road, Balanced out great. (only 1.75 max weight on any of the wheels) So far have been amazing in the mud, I live in Louisiana and mud is about all we have here, I now get through stuff in 2 wheel that I wouldn't have thought about in 4wd before the lift and tires! As far as rain, we haven't got too much of it yet, but the little bit we have, they actually gripped well for a M/T!
O Yea, and I got a set of 5 for about $900 shipped (285-70r17)

Now that I think about it, I'll probably go with the Maxxis tires as well... only $140 apiece in 255/85 from onlinetires.com

Not anyone over here that I know of... scarcity of tires is the main problem. Lots of people on ExPo running them though... nice and tall, but also skinny.

I don't have them on my truck.. I was asking if someone had them on that I haven't seen yet Since Phil threw that size out there.

BFG makes a great 255/85R16 KM 2.. I have couple guys running them on 4Runners here.. They perform awesome, I've been waiting for him to wear one out so I can test fit it.. Too bad I went with rims instead of adapters.. I have ton's of 6on5.5 options up here, and I could have just pull one off my co-workers rig. Oh well Hein sight is a great thing!!

Hmm Build thread.. Guess I should make one! :work: !

If I manage to wear out these tires, and can scrape together the money for new tires, since you can't find them used out here, I'll be running 255/85 Maxxis Bighorns or KM2's soon enough. Best size for our vehicles, IMO.
