Regearing?

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

I have been looking at lifting my For a long while now trying to plan it out so I can get everything before I have someone install it (I am not the handyman kind at all). After researching and looking at alot of threads, I am wondering, should I do all of the regearing before I even consider starting the lift and suspension? I got stuck with the baby of the bunch gear, the 3.42. I am wanting to do a suspension lift and MAYBE a body lift and run 33s which I know I will need to regear to run 33s. Plead let me know any opinions about all of this. Most of my driving is city and I will be offroading very seldom, maybe a couple times a month.

I went from 3.42 to 4.10.. well the axle is still on the pallet in my driveway, but that's the plan so far...

As long as your sure your going to lift and go larger tires, then yes, you can re-gear now while you gather the lift and tires.

Depending on how low you want it to "feel" you might want to go with 4.56 if the plan is for 33's, but some of it will be preference.

Just don't judge how it drives re-geared on how it will end up after lifting the bigger tires though.

Once again,I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination so this may sound like a really dumb question, if I regear to a 4.10 or 4.56 wouldn't I have to change the front as well?

Yes, both the front and rear have to match. The front diff seems to be hard to get out for some, I don't think it was that bad.

I got a 4.10 front diff for $350 and a complete rear 14bolt 9.5" rear axle for too much lol. $608, but I had to have it shipped.

I wouldn't regear yet. Get the lift and tires and a scangauge. Watch your trans temps. Enjoy the lift. Eventually you can regear, but it's not really a prerequisite. It's certainly a good idea, but not always necessary depending on your driving.

You would want to do research and ask more questions from other to determine if 4.10's or 4.56's... However, considering you said most of your driving is in-town, if you decide to go for the 4.10's I would suggest doing the re-gear ASAP. I made this switch myself, going from 3.42 to 4.10 while running 30.6" tires. Most of my driving is at 55mph or less, and this has made a very nice difference in the way the truck handles in heavy traffic, while still having no trouble cruising at 90+ on the highway (I admit nothing!).

Changing the rear is an easy one-man job, changing the front without experience will teach you many new swear words. If you are lucky enough to know somebody with HPTuners, I can get you the file to reprogram the speedometer for 4.10s, but you are limited in correcting for the tire size (which unfortunately doesn't go above 30.5"). Something to keep in mind as you are planning your upgrades.

I am thinking about doing it first just to get it out of the way, my driving is literally city roads at like 50-60 max and some highways

I am gonna go with the 4.10 that is all I really need, and yes a high percent of my driving is city.
