Hub nuts

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

I picked up a front diff seal and ordered front hubs and ball joints. figuered i would change oil in the diffs and tc at the same time. I was reading the crappy Haynes manual to make sure i bought enough fluids and see what they say about removing cv shafts. anyway it states to remove and discard the hub nuts and install new nuts. I have never replaced them on trucks, quads, trailers that I've worked on. just curious as to why?

Supposedly, they are one-time use only lock nuts. Meaning that they are designed to stay tight once you get them where you want them.

Both of mine have been a chore to remove and install every single time I've done something. I guess it could be a liability issue as well.

They are tension nuts or whatever they are called and supposedly do not hold as well with subsequent installs, but I am still using the stock ones after dozens of CV removals and installs.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

some places call them "prevailing torque nuts" or "crimp nuts". they are squeezed or bent in a little bit to make them bite the bolt threads harder. like the guys above said, probably just a liability, or worried that after several removals and installs the nuts will lose their "crimp".
