Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Front Diff Removal.

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

The adjusters are under the axle/intermediate shaft seals. There are tabs on those seals that keep them from turning. As long as you don't change the seals with the diff case split you're ok.

that is good to know. I almost pulled mine out to replace the bearing when I replaced my front diff seal.
I went ahead and bought that bearing when I bought the seal just in case.

The bearing basically seats into the adjuster. The adjuster is then threaded into the housing. So any rotation in the adjuster will change your carrier bearing preload.

So theroretically, if you marked one of the "cogs" on the adjuster with its location, relative to the seal housing, and counted the amount of turns until it came, you could replace the bearing and reinstall with no possible repercussion?

Backlash 0.13-0.18mm
Pinion bearing preload 1.7-3.4N-m
Pinion and Diff Case bearing preload 3.4-6.2N-m

New bearings #s only

Good luck

So the adjuster/tensionder is located behind the Seal. Cause I don't see it. Cause if that be the case there should be no way I could bump it out of spec. Just makin sure.

correct, that is what Donny was saying. Don't mess with the outer seals and you should be fine.

If you replace the bearings, you will have to readjust. Bearings can have minor variations between them. Being that they set into a conical race, the variations are multiplied - this is the way the differential accounts for those differences, so they can be adjusted to work with the tolerances of the bearings, races, and carrier.

Very good to know. I downloaded the service manuals from GMT. Just haven't had the chance to go through that section, yet.

to clarify, James is taking about the differential bearings, not the CV bearing

Chango Pm'd me asking how I got my front diff out so I figured I'd update this.

I took it to a shop(they let me get my hands dirty and cut me a deal) and we dropped the oil pan to remove the front diff. Jon A's Method would never had worked(It must have worked for him though). I explained to the owner about Jon's method and he was baffled that Jon was even able to remove it that way. We looked and looked trying to figure out how he got it out and we couldn't figure it out. It took us about a solid 8 hours to get the diff out using the oil pan method.
