G80 VS lockers and others

G80, GU6, GT4, GT5, WTF? This section is for gearing and driveline stuff.

I don't know if it goes in here but hey why not lol

I was looking at this G80 Locker, now can this just install in the rear of my EXT, is it the right one, and or do I need all of the internals to put a G80 in mine?

Or would it be easier to just get this Lockright Locker and just be done with it?

http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-128230 ... ocker.html

Would this work the same as the Lockright Locker?

So which one would work and which one would be better?

You'll need an entire 8.5" G80 carrier if you want a G80. The Lock Right is the direction I'm going for simplicity and strength. Keep in mind that the street manners of a Lock Right are nothing like the G80. The posi is an option as well, but if you have total loss of traction on one side (ie a lifted wheel) it does nothing for you.

open - doesn't lock, you get wheel spin

G80 - acts like open until 100 rpm difference between tires, then locks tires together

lockright - acts as open except when under power, then it locks the tires together - so you have to drive a bit differently, don't apply power when turning sharp

I stumbled on something last night while going over all the random stuff I've acquired on gear/locker swaps.

I have a chart showing the various GM axles, related part numbers, and aftermarket options.

It lists a Lockright for the GM 8" open carrier. Part number is 1810.

1810 shows up as made for the Ford 9" third member, in either 28 or 31 spline varieties. It works for either because the existing side gears are used.

I have absolutely zero data to support that this would actually work, but assuming the side gears have a similar tooth pattern to the Ford, there may be a Lockright option for the 8". People could say goodbye to weaksauce spider gears and not have to "upgrade" to explosion prone gov-locks.

I'm done with the 8", but just thought I'd throw that out there for someone else to run with. Here's that chart, I don't remember where I got it (could have been here!).

I had a lockright in my YJ for awhile and i found it a bit squirrely on road for sure but it did help off-road. Nothing compared to ARB though.

u wont like the lock rite if u have a vagina, i had a g80 in my 14-bolt forever, it had a 454 infront of it and was spinning 38s. they will last as long as ur not stupid with the gas pedal. the way most people grenade them is by mashing the gas while its disengaged, spinnig the crap out of the one tire and when it sences the rpm difference and goes to engage, it cant take the shock from locking a non-spining tire to a spinning tire, then BOOM!!. so heres the trick, because onece it locks its locked till about 15mph. u let the one tire slip at a slower speed till it engages, then once its locked, u can give it hell. till 15mph in wheel speed. so as long as u dont drive like a 16 year old jeep owner, it'll be ok. now another trick, if ur handy is... to grind alittle bit off the end of the arm that engages it, so it will stay locked to a higher mph, it un-locks by a centrifical weight that moves out under higher rpm, so if u make it lighter it wot dis-engage till a higher speed.

now on the loc-rite. once u get one u'll never go back, absolutly positive engagement, and will tAKE WHAT EVER U THROW AT IT. uwont really notice it on the road, the torque converter in ur auto will unload it, if u have a stick n u dont dis-engage the clutch in the turn the tires will chirp. but its no biggy.

thats my 2 cents n hope i can help some of u out. oh by the way, that link was for a set of open spiders to replace ur g80

My G80 actually let go while trying to bounce up a rock. I wasn't in the gas too much but the rapid engagement/disengagement killed it. IMO there's just too many small parts in that thing that can/do fail. Another thing is I believe the 14 bolt has 3 spider gears, the 8"/8.6" has two... and they're pretty damned wimpy in the 8".

I just installed my No-Slip (Lock-Right with positive disengagement) today. I can turn the wheel all the way in one direction and mash the gas an it doesn't make a peep. Pretty cool. I need to get out and play with it now.
