And the Outback isn't plagued with repeaters, unlike here, where I seem to always being in range to a repeater (or driving right by it).

Hey I may have put up a couple of those repeaters.. Some of those repeaters are connected to linked systems as well and reach out there to get you some help.

The antenna on that HMMWV are not really all that, they aren't even co-phased. I use to run with systems like that in the military each antenna is typically on a different radio in there.

Here. I have setup a few sites around Vegas, helped a friend out down around potato patch. I know a couple of guys that had sites down to Phoenix area.

The guys on the following forum may have better input on this subject. I don't really know your roof rack system.

You can get any aftermarket roof rack and probably make it work. Just make sure you ground your rack well.
