Plunderstorm Returns to World of Warcraft in Early 2025

Blizzard has announced that the popular World of Warcraft game mode, Plunderstorm, will make its return in early 2025, almost a year after its initial debut. Players can look forward to a mix of old and new rewards, including mounts and cosmetics, as they participate in and win matches.

Introduced in Dragonflight Patch 10.2.6, Plunderstorm is a pirate-themed battle royale mode inspired by games like Fortnite. In this mode, players create avatars distinct from their regular World of Warcraft characters, dressing them in pirate attire. These swashbucklers are dropped into a 60-player version of the Arathi Highlands zone map, where they must gather coins, items, and class-themed abilities to level up and eliminate opponents. A storm wall gradually closes in on the Arathi Highlands, preventing players from camping in one spot for too long. Participants can choose to play Solo or team up in Duos or Trios to conquer the battlefield.

While additional announcements regarding the Warcraft franchise are expected on November 13, Blizzard has preemptively addressed a popular request. In a recent blog post, the company confirmed Plunderstorm's return in early 2025, although a specific date has yet to be revealed. The first run of Plunderstorm lasted nearly two months, ending in late April 2024, so the upcoming return will be nearly a year after its initial run. The next installment of Plunderstorm will introduce new cosmetic rewards alongside previous items like mounts and appearances available through the new Plunderstore. However, it remains unclear whether this store will accept in-game currency or real money.

As before, Plunderstorm will be accessible only in the retail version of World of Warcraft for a limited time, with all add-ons likely disabled to ensure fair play. In the 2024 version, Blizzard implemented a Renown system that rewarded players with cosmetic items for ranking up, capping at 40. Players earned Renown points based on their performance, with additional points awarded for eliminating multiple opponents and achieving high finishes. It remains to be seen whether the Renown system will be featured again in the 2025 iteration of Plunderstorm.
