I did a PVC CAI and got rid of the resonator. There was definitely a lot more engine noise after that. Then I started wondering why I was using 3" pipe leading to the throttle-body, but there was only a 2" hole in the air box for fresh air to come in... so I cut a second 2" hole and used a heat gun to shape a piece of pipe so I could pick fresh air from in front of the radiator. Adding this new hole actually quieted the engine noise. I never gutted my airbox, but I did get one of the conical oiled filters, which seems to really open up a lot more space for the air to actually get to the filter.
Yeah the butt-dyno is unreliable, but mine says that I gained a surge of passing-power at around 45mph. When the original pipe came apart and I had to go back to stock for a couple weeks (after having the original in place for over a year), it felt sluggish to me. I didn't notice any difference at all in my MPG.
