The Owner's Manual even said A4WD was safe in 2002. But before they redesigned an internal bearing mount in the 2005-vintage cases, the force of engagement could break that part. Goofs.
If the driver is pushing the envelope enough on slippery surfaces to actually get A4WD to engage, then they're either going too fast for conditions, or they should be in 4HI. IMHO. Only rational justification I've seen for A4WD in many discussions on the OS is pulling from a snow-covered side street, turning 90 degrees onto an ice-patch-covered main street with traffic coming that within a few feet turns dry. But you need traction right after you turn and start up on the main street. Can't think of any other time you NEED A4WD, and the onset of engagement might be enough to break tires loose when you would otherwise value the predictability of 2HI or 4HI.
