Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

What did you do to your GMT today?

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

Decided to do a pit of preventative maintenance on my rig before the trip this weekend. Decided to start off with a tire rotation.

Image

Was going to do an oil change, but this oil only has ~4k on it, and it's full syn, so I'll save it for later. So then i decided to tackle the issue i've been having with my e-brake for several years now. I'll adjust it so it's nice and tight, but if i pull too hard on the handle, the spur wheel spins loose and gives up all of my braking power. I had it apart trying to diagnose the issue, when the "meat" of one of the brake shoes just falls off. Luckily, I accidentally bought a new set of e-brake shoes about 2 years ago, and threw them on. What I ended up doing to counter act the spur wheel loosening was adding 2 thin washers next to the spur wheel, so if it breaks loose again, I won't lose all of my braking power. (washers not in this pic, but go in the gap next to spur wheel)

(PS. Dont know if 'spur wheel' is the correct name, but i like using it)

Then I have him a bath. (also painted the rad skid the same color as the grille, and plasti dip'd the top of the front doors)

The End.

Looking good DB. Although I don't really understand painting the top of the drivers door. Looks really odd.

They were getting really beat up from the branches on my trails, so hopefully, this will give them a chance.

Got my alignment today, plus the radiator flush. Those guys there don't like working on my truck... He said he had to air chisel some of the mangled metal out of the way so he could get to one of the LCA bolts... hehehe

I like your term, but the one all the parts store clerks and mechanics recognize is "star wheel" or adjuster wheel. Typically a little spring clicker v-thingie I don't know a better name for will spring down into a valley in the wheel and provide some anti-movement friction. On a vehicle with full-time (not hidden emergency) drum brakes, the star wheel is touched by a lever that ratchets the wheel when you back up, as a self-adjusting feature. It's been a long time since one had to adjust their own drum brakes using the traditional bent-chisel sort of tool through the backing plate.

I don't like our e-brake system. But maybe my spur wheel has been rounded off too much, and/or my "spring V thing" has lost too much springness... either way, it wont hold and tension when applied and my truck was likely to roll off a mountain with me sleeping in it

Our e-brake system is fairly standard setup and works well when parts are in good shape. I like it.

So I've been gone for far to long. I've been gone for work and finally made it back home this week. So.. Today I ordered the remainder of the parts i need, wheel adaptors from Mark, Tires from treadwright, Z71 springs from Ebay, and my rear suspension parts from Massive. I'm going to start working on my front suspension this weekend. just ball joints and bushings plus a couple other minor things i need to do (seals and gaskets). I'm thinking I will flip my UCA's while im working up there. Hopefully in a few weeks i will be back on the road and ready for some ridding

yeah, outside of the lack of auto adjustment it's pretty normal, one of the few systems on vehicles that has largely not changed at all. It's a testament to the solid design.

Which method did you use for the front diff? Inquiring minds want to know.

If he doesn't have them I found a set I can get you for fairly cheap, but they are kinda rusty.

As long as they are dimensionally sound and the bushings are not worn too bad.

The bushings are practically nonexistent. I left them behind; I can go back and get them if you want!!

Well I'm my trailblazers apparent mission to not be modified... One of my brake pads decided it would rather break....
So after a tow back home and a long walk to Napa... My HIAD class ended up costing more than expected lol

Ah, I was wondering why he said he left them behind... it didn't compute till now.

How bad is bad when you're talking about the bushings?

I was texting him about it yesterday, apparently you'd need to replace the bushings to get something useful. Or maybe just chuck some plastic rod in a lathe and turn it down to the bushing size.
