Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

What did you do to your GMT today?

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by mikekey » Wed Mar 27, 2013 6:42 pm

Yeah I will let her explain what happened after I went to work at 1pm. But guess we will need a new fender. And somebody learned a valuable lesson today with her truck.
Once lifted 03 Trailblazer on 35's, gave it up to travel the USA with my family.

Took Mike to work, came back to the shop and torqued the font lugs on the passenger side, and waited for my step-dad to finish altering the fender on the driver's side. Got distracted while talking to my Dad, assisting my step-dad, and whatnot..... And well, I forgot to torque the driver's side. :wallbash:

It's kindof surreal to watch your tire roll away and then bounce off something and roll back, in case anyone is wondering. Several people stopped to assist, but thankfully the jack and tools were in the rear of the truck. Called my step-dad for assistance and local police to help keep people from rear-ending me since I was still blocking half a lane. By the time help got there I had taken 4 lugs from the other tires and had jacked up the truck. Tire went back on (some scratching on the inside of the new rim but no structural damage) and I continued down the road to pick up Mike.

I was pretty sure he was going to kill me for the damage, and my step-dad assured me that he and Mike would have a VERY long chat if Mike was really upset (picture the dad always standing at the door with a shotgun to greet all potential suitors). Mike was mad at first, but he ended up calming down quick when the water works started. Personally I think I did pretty well holding it all together until then and having the gumption and know-how of how to resolve the situation as quick as possible.

In the end though, I still made a stupid mistake that I'll be paying for, especially when I go to the truck shop tomorrow for the scheduled alignment.....yeah, hazing anyone?

And before someone asks, No, I did not feel any vibration to indicate the tire was loose until a few seconds before it came off. At that point I was already slowing down and was going approximately 5 mph when it happened. And no, the caliper was not damaged.

Just my pride......

Definitely fixable. The door can easily be fixed, and Mike and I are overdue for a date in the junkyard. A fender should be easy to find (or buy).

Just glad I took an unusual route to go pick him up. Otherwise I would have found myself in the middle of a six lane road during rush hour.

Had a Detroit sheer all my lugs off an old truck...it is nuts when your tire just rolls away.

Glad you are safe!

Tyler, do you have the part number for that awd sleeve? I should probably add that to the disconnect rebuild article.

I am glad you are OK. I was trying to figure out what happened just looking at the photo and was stumped.

It will buff out and be good as new.

Come to think of it, this is the only other accident I've had. My first was with my other TB about 7 years ago. Backed into my brother's truck (following his guidance and direction) and just scraped the driver's side rear quarter panel, which would have buffed out had I taken the time.

Personally I'd consider this a "woman mechanic" joke, even a blonde joke, not a women driver joke. So there. :finger:

Thought I'd share these since I've seen a few other posts. My wife took it in to get aligned this morning. Luckily all the wheels stayed on the truck! :poke: Final results, before and after. (top is after, botom is before)

Thanks for the push in the right direction Bacon.

To clarify, the part number is 12471636. GMPartsEast does not include the first two digits of the part number, to prevent you from shopping around.

Does anyone recall seeing a picture of the AWD collar? I'd like to insert one into the article for reference.
