Non TB, but my 97 K1500 gets 14-15 combined mileage over most tanks of gas. 12 city, 16 highway. I drive a total of 32 highway miles and 10 city miles everyday to school and back, and another 15 city miles if i have work that day plus the extra daily errands. Those highway miles are usually 75-85 mph.


I can milk 18mpg out of it going to the OBX @ 65mph with the bed full of luggage, coolers etc.

Anybody think the width of the tires has anything to do with fuel economy (other than weight)? Like more contact area creates more resistance? Thin tires get better mpg than wide?

Yes, narrower tires do make a difference. Thats why a lot if tractor trailers are switching to super single tires. The rolling resistance of two regular tires vs one super single. The downfall for them is price. Id rather have a 255-85-16 (i think thats a 33"?) But they are hard to find.

The super singles aren't going to last. If you blow one you can't just drive to a shop to have it repaired. You are stuck where you are, and have to have a service truck find a tire, then bring it out to you. Plus they're harder to mount. It could take nearly a day to get one replaced.

If I recall, the super singles have some run flat capabilities to allow you to make it to a station. Or something... I sat in on a briefing on those a while back and Michelin had obviously thought through those issues. Lots of positive reasons to run a single and likely outweigh the negatives. It just a matter of switching an entire industry.

That's fine if they're just ran flat. There are also air systems that are to maintain a constant air pressure. But neither of those do any good if there's a blowout. And that is what 90% of tire replacement is for. That's also not accounting for the upgrade cost. $600 per wheel and $800 per tire.

I have run them on trailers before. They saved about 4-500 lbs but they never wore right. I can get 600-550k out of a set of duals. My singles only made it 250k before a blowout and a service call to also replace the airbag it took out. I barely picked up .25 mpg running them.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of mpg were you getting with duallys? 0.25 is significant over long drives if you're getting 5mpg.

Still pulling 18MPG-20MPG city depending on how annoyingly slow we want to drive. If I give up the hyper-miling and just drive normally it has dropped down to 16MPG. Which isn't really horrible. However my setup is pretty much stock compared to everyone else here.

Very odd, I checked my gas mileage on a trip yesterday and I got 222.3/12.12 = 18.34 mpg at mostly 70mph with cruise.
The past few times I had gotten just under 16mpg.
It must have been the rain reduced tire friction or something because I don't think anything else has changed.
