What shocks for 4-5 inches of lift in rear?

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by JDub1661 » Sat Nov 23, 2013 10:02 am

So I have been doing some reading on here and through some suspension companies. I am new to this site, but only because I didn't make a profile. I have been reading on here for a long time. Still trying to figure our the profile thing too...... So I have an 02 TB LTZ, with Marc's Custom lift (3 inch in front and 2.5 in rear), Z-71 springs, 02 Avalanche z-71 Bilstein rear shocks, stock front shocks, ad 33's on factory wheels with 1.5 inch spacer. As you read, the avalanche shocks suck. They are maxed out, and the width and bolt diameters are all messed up. So instead of adapt my truck for the suspension, I need to get new shocks. I called BDS and none of their shocks are designed for any lift over 2 inches. I would like to stick with a TB shock, not a Tahoe shock, but I don't have to. I just need the shocks to have a much larger extended length than stock. Does anyone have any idea? TYIA

You still aren't doing anything new. Here is our discussion of alternative shocks from a couple of years ago viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1747. It has a list of shocks that were found to fit our vehicles, I don't know how many were tried out of it other then the Skyjackers. I know for the Skyjackers you need to fill in about a 13/16" gap, I used 7/16"X1 1/4" body washers to do this and used 10 on each shock.

Um, well, there is the thread right below this one that is titled rear shock and spring discussion... so, um, well, I would probably look there. It has links to other threads too!
Also a search for "rear shocks" gives a tremendous volume of reading. It's been a topic of frequent discussion for a long while.

I wasn't active on this board when the other thread was going (but I have read it since), so my solution isn't on there (and I'm still working on my build thread as well). I decided to drop the big bucks when I upgraded and go with the 2.25 DirtLogic shocks from FabTech. These are absolutely rock solid ... no problems whatsoever with many, many kms of road and off-road driving.

The picture below was when they were first fitted up. Some points:
- Part number FTS81026, 10" travel, extended length 27.56" and compressed length 17.52" (they make longer and shorter ones, these are somewhere in the middle)
- The only way they would fit is reversed for us, i.e. with the shock body at the top (its too big to fit at the bottom)
- I added shock boots of course, to keep the pistons clean
- I replaced the washers with proper solid spacers
- I wish I painted them with clear rust paint (only the steel body) back then. With years of use up here they started to rust in spots. I recently took them off, cleaned them with a Dremel tool (soft wheel), and painted them clear. They look nice and work as good as the day I bought them
- No clearance issues although I did get limiting straps for the rear

That's great! But are those Skyjacker springs that are in the pic? haha Does anyone have a link on how to order them. I searched on Skyjacker.com a while back and found the springs, but only in whole lift kits. Also, does anyone know what colors they are availible in? I know Regulator expected them to be red, and wasn't happy when they were not. I'd want the same color as Alek as it fits my color scheme.

They came like that in silver when I first got them way back when ... but started to rust after daily use up here in the winter. So when I was doing some service a couple of years later, I had the shop sand-blast them and powder coat them black. Since then I have touched them up with black rust paint from time to time.

It is curious that Skyjacker have removed references to their springs only on the web site. And if you look into their 2012 catalog (PDFs) under Coil Springs, they only have the C40R listed. But Summit (and others) still list the C25R product. Don't know what's going on ...

I really want those fab techs now.

So let me get those right,t he C25R is listed as a front coil spring. Wouldn't that mean there might be some other springs that fit in the rear out there? Anyone look at anything else?
