87's with z71

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Stoked » Fri Nov 19, 2010 11:46 am

Hey everybody,
I currently have stock 84's in the front. I dont like the soft suspension. Im looking at getting 87s or 88s in the front with z71 springs in the back. I might look into getting marks lift in the future, but for now i'll be content with and inch or so of lift with a stiffer ride. Any yay's or nay's?

The stiffer springs, front and rear, will give you effective lift. Based on the chart...

I still have my 88s sitting in the garage to be installed... :wallbash:

Yeah, I've been studying that chart since yesterday :study:. From that I figured in get some sort of minimal lift. Another thing I wanted to ask. I know my shocks are working fine at the moment, but would I need replace them with the bilsteins or the BDS to account for the stiffer springs? or can I leave the stock ones for now?

Maybe do heavier springs and just marks outside strut spacer to keep more level if you want z71 in rear.

You should consider replacing them, especially since you will be taking the front assemblies apart to replace the spring.

Bilsteins in front and BDS in rear.... that is my suggestion.

Front:
- bilsteins
- 87s
- strut spacer

Rear:
- BDS
- z71

Sound good?

Seems fine. But I'd go with something like the 88 or 89s up front. I'd rather have as much spring lift as possible and as little spacer lift as possible

You forgot the 1.5 factor due to the LCA. So 88 springs will give you about 1.2" of effective lift once the springs settle in.

effective lift is essentially the lift of the chassis?

Yep, the chart only factors spring differences, but due to the lever effect of the LCA, you get more chassis/wheel lift.

Look at my build page. The pictures there are with 87/85 springs.

The second one is the mark MC full 2.5 lift front with 87/85 springs and Z71+2" mark lift in the rear. That was the day before and the day after the lift install.

Also look further down in this section for a post "stock vs lifted", I posted some pictures of mine lifted next to my friends stock TB. I think his has 83 springs. Thats how much of a difference it will make.

It did go up in the front. The rear is way up now that all the springs are settling in, but the front isn't that high.

Also replaced the shocks/struts when the lift went in. After doing it and driving it for a bit, I wouldn't bother without doing the lift. Its not that much, and I am already trying to talk myself out of a body lift.

So, this week I recieved the z71 springs, 87s, and the suspension max wanna-be 2.5" spacers. As a noob, I'm dying to install them!!!! I am eventually gonna go with the bilsteins/front and bds/rear, but right now, they are not in the budget. At 130k, I've paid close attention to the effectiveness of the stock shocks; They seem to be working fine.

The real issue: my tread is low... very low....Im running slicks. I wanted to get some 31-32". I'd feel safer with that size tire once i have the lift.

I'm rambling on.....plain and simple: Install z71 springs, 87s, and spacers w/out shocks, for now?

Btw, I realize I'm gonna have to do the work twice for the front shocks.

The stock rear shocks will probably max out with the Z71s and a 2" lift spacer.

:Iagree: They WILL max out and cause you to bounce. Make sure you wear your retainers when your driving around. BDS has a cost-effective 9500 which cost $55/each i believe. Well worth the investment and can compensate for this extra needed travel

JD, I checked your build and see that you have tahoe shocks(edit*) . How have those worked out? I ask because I can get a pair from truck where I got the z71 springs.
