Removing Front Swaybar

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by madmanvillain » Thu May 27, 2010 1:06 am

ive been running with my front disconnected and im still stock everything...i love how it feels so freeing over anything ive done yet but im going to be reconnecting it tomorrow because i have a decent amount of driving im doing this weekend...i think when i do my lift im going to keep it off and maybe just take it out...with a stiffer suspension and wider tires i dont think im going to feel half the body roll i do now

as for rears? im planning on finding or fabbing a new sway bar that doesnt sit so low and keep it connected

I think I might disconnect mine tomorrow and see what I think. I am just convinced that with all the spring tension, it will actually feel better with it all disconnected.

Go for it... worst case scenario, you don't like it, reconnect. I've had mine disconnected for months and I'm very happy with the ride. Feels much safer and much better on bumps.

Just an FYI for those looking to permanently remove the front swaybar... if you have one of the years where the bar runs through the subframe (as opposed to the area just aft of the radiator) the only way to remove it altogether is to either jack up the engine, or cut the bar in half... I did the latter.

I haven't done the disconnect yet. It's raining right now, and I don't feel 100% good about doing it and not being able to test it out without my boy being in the vehicle. It's just me and him home this week...might try tonight after his ballgame if it's not rained out.

Heh. After reading about people leaving it disconnected or taking it off, I was looking at it this weekend while doing the lift wondering, "How the heck did they get it out of there...?"

After last weekend my front endlinks are officially toast. My swaybar will become a piece of scrap metal.

One more for the cause. :viking:

Did the disconnect 3 days ago. So far, it's pretty nice! I do notice the body roll now, but it doesn't seem to be anymore than when I didn't have the MarkMC lift installed. It feels a while lot better when going over bumps, you don't get the side to side thrashing as much. It's been 99% on road since I did the disconnect, but a couple quick trips down some dirts roads and over some curbs, it is MUCH better! I did notice that when the wheel is cranked pretty far to one side or the other, and I mash on the gas, it feels like it is pushing forward before turning immediatly like it did before. So I won't be doin that anymore.

I was wondering about making quick disconnects out the stocks? Drilling a hole and using a cotter pin maybe? Just something I was looking at while under there.

Drilling hole through bolts DOES NOT work for quick disco's. They snap pretty easy. I broke 3 of 4.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

Weight reduction:

Image

Turns out my bad front endlink was just a loose nut that I couldn't see. Oh well.

Someone was pestering me about taking off my rear swaybar too and seeing how things went. He owes me a beer now. (You know who you are.) Driver side rear endlink had to come off with a sawzall, so this is semi permanent for me I guess.

Impressions:

OMFG! I feel like I just took off a pair of tidy whities that were two sizes too small and then walked out onto the balcony in a nice breeze. Talk about a free feeling. It's a little looser in the turns but predictable enough. This isn't a racecar anyway.

I think they're staying off. Can't wait to wheel this weekend.

i was wondering how much roll around corners at speed you would get with the rear disconnected...might try it my self!!

Have you ever driven old cars? (Like 1960-70's's old) It's kinda like that... but not as bad.

Hey let me know if you are getting rid of the front swaybar and/or hardware
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

I tend to hoard my stock parts...but I do need garage space so that may change... you have dibs if I get rid of it.

Did somebody say Beer!

Yep, you do have the Balls.

I may try the front off but not the rear (sense you say the arms hitting are not an issue) but not right away. Especially after just tightening it all up and cleaning the tools up. ;)

I was thinking this too initially. With all the extra spring pressure, it's nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.
