Um, for the time you put in... spend the money and buy some aircraft aluminum stripper. It works wonders and will strip anything but chrome off aluminum. definitely worth the 10-20 bucks at advanced.

Directions:
1.) WASH WHEELs
2.) spray or coat aluminum rims with stripper
2.5.) scrub lightly for a minute with a brush
3.) let sit for 30 minutes
3.5.) drink beers
4.) rinse off with a hose
4.5.) more beers
5.) take relax and enjoy all the time and effort you didn't have to put out

Caution:
It will strip off any and all clearcoat, paint and impurities on wheels... so if you like that clearcoat don't use. But I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if you're using steel wool your stripping the cc anyways.

Hey, buddy. Good to see you're still alive. That would've been a great thought a week ago, but I just have a little left to do on the one wheel. It may have been more labor intensive, but gave me more control as to the finish. I've got a couple more ideas to take care of... painting the holes gunmetal and I may reclear the wheels(but the polish seems to be doing a great job).

Since they're aluminum and they're "stripped" your gonna have to polish them and throw a coat of wax on often, or you'll stain them.

That is one reason I'm debating clearing them as a preventative measure. I thought about taking them to get PCed, but that was when I didn't think I'd be able to get a good finish without it.
