Maximum Tire Size w/ Wheel Spacers & NO Lift

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by DAKR » Wed Mar 28, 2012 10:43 pm

What is the largest (16") tire that can be ran with only spacers (no lift) and not rub? My guess is as much as MAYBE 235/85R16??? My point is that Tires will be forced into my budget before a lift. I am ok not having the biggest of the big, but I want to know what size would be driveable until I budget for a lift. Unless others chime in I will be running 255/70R16. :(

Use the search bar, there's a tire chart that show how big you can go with each set-up. Helps a lot.
Markmc 2.5 lift, 2"Markmc body lift. Markmc 1.5 spacers, 33" Dynapro MT's, exhaust, EMT cams, CAI, Chipped, Light Bar. T.L. Guards

Then you don't know what you're looking for.... There will be no clear cut answer to your question. You need to arrive at your own conclusion based on the information provided.

Which means looking at everyone's build until I find what appears to be and then ask.... I thought this would save me a weeks worth of searching. You guys seem to know each other to remember close frieneds mods.

You'll find your way off that regret board a lot faster if you research and appreciate the wealth of data posted. Many of us have made mistakes... And we learned from them and posted about it all already. It's not our duty to sit idle waiting for questions to be made so that we can answer them over and over again. It's your duty to read what has been posted and reach an conclusion from there. If in fact your question has not been answered... then post.... But you already knew that your answer was out there when you made this thread. We are not going to spoon feed people here.

I'm not sure what David is asking has been done before or at least well published.
He wants spacers with no lift, most want to know the tallest tire with no spacers.
David, most TB's can run up to a 30.6 inch tire with no spacer.
With spacers and no lift you should be able to go a little taller.
Really unless you find someone who has done it, the only way to know is to measure your tire and check your clearances both flexed and un-flexed in turns and out of turns. Once you get those measurements and see how much clearance you have you can figure out how much larger a tire you can run.

I'm just guessing that a 265/75/16 would likely fit with mild offroading but will rub pretty hard if you flex much. I expect a 265/70/16 would work fine and might actually fit without spacers in many cases. You're just going to have to do your homework and get out the tape measure and see.

Some may disagree with me but I went with the lift first because while it doesn't give you any clearance for the rear end, it does get your frame up a couple inches and give more clearance there. I'm running a lift with no spacers and 255/70/16 and that has worked well for me in beach sand, I don't drag on the ruts nearly as bad as before. Your situation might be different. One other thought as well is keep an eye on the classifieds here, GMT and trailvoy as folks are starting to pull off lifts. Sometimes you can find a good deal(as I did) on those parts.

I didn't see this post earlier.
if you want to stay off the mod regret board save and get your lift/spacers/tires/shocks all at one time otherwise here is what will happen.
You will get your spacers and get a tire that works.......
A few months later you'll run across a deal or just can't wait and buy a lift.
then you are lifted with spacers and you'll want taller tires...

With spacers to clear larger tires than 30.6", the tires are going to rub horribly on fender sheet metal when the suspension is compressed and turning. 31's are definitely going to rub. Even 30's might rub with spacers and no lift, depending on the variable sag that your springs might have already taken on.

Strong recommendation: don't do tires first. If your budget can't support the entire project at once, get cheaper used tires to tide you over until it can. Assuming you're serious about offroading, and I think you've already been advised that aggressive offroading is not usually done safety by folks who have a problem buying a set of tires and paying for an extraction or repair in the same month.

Thanks for all of the posts. Since my tires are going to need replacing before I can budget a lift It looks like 255/70R16 for me. I am not looking to build a monster truck I only wanted to know if I could get away with a bigger tire for a few months without tearing my ride up. I don't want to be spoon fed, I did search alot before I made this post. Maybe I couldn't find it because it is a dumb idea!

Not dumb so much as suboptimal. We're not all building monster trucks, but what we DO build gets used. It's the MISSION of the community after all.

May I suggest that you forgo the wheel spacers, and instead put that money towards a lift. Then just get 30.5" tires for now.

Or find a set of take offs on Craigslist or something to hold you over until you have the money to lift, add spacers, and a taller tire.

just make sure you get air bags for the rear springs though.
they'll help give support when you haul heavy items and the next time you back into the river you can pump them up and float out :-) j/k......

No worries David, we didn't scare you away before (you only ran off and changed your name).
I think it is evident you are going to use your truck and you are trying to do the research, no worries.
