All-terrains

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by Saxis » Wed Oct 07, 2009 1:09 pm

Thought it might be helpful to discuss different all-terrain tires, as I'm kinda "on the fence" about which one I'll go with. I was hoping to get my lift, tires and shocks done before winter hit, but it's already upon us. We don't get "winter" here. There's pretty much 8 months of rain between October and June followed by 4 months of showers with occasional sunny days. :hissyfit: My stock Fortera H/Ls have 18,000 miles on them and have tread left, so I might be able to recoup a bit of money from them. I'm shooting for about 31.5", hoping not to do any extreme cutting/bashing of the finder liner.

What I'm considering:

Really, the BFGs are just too damn expensive. I've kinda been leaning toward the Terra Grapplers for price and the closest location for me to get them without paying shipping. But I recently looked up the Pro Comps and for the price, the 50,000 mile warranty and Snow rating is pretty unbeatable. Plus, the tread looks good and is a bit deeper (18/32) than the Grapplers (14/32). Anyone have any experience with Pro Comps A/T?

I have deffinately seen the BFG's for much cheaper than that, about $200. There are so many tire places that if you find a price most will beat it or at least match. But from what I have heard the A/T's ain't that great traction wise if your planning on offroading.

My buddy runs 35 in Pro Comp AT on his Expedition and loves them. Doesnt really get in the mud much, but they handle the weight of his diesel and still are doing good after prolly 25,000 miles. He has somewheres around 850 hp and lights them up from time to time, so without that abuse I would say they would last 50,000. He loves the ride but he had swampers before these.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

I have too, but not in that size. About the cheapest I've seen them is $229 or so. Also $249 with $100 rebate if you buy 4. I'm trying to stay under the $200 mark... :wallbash:

Noted, thanks! For the little bit of price difference, I'm liking the looks of the Pro Comps over the Nittos. I might be driving over a few mountain passes in December this year, so the Severe/Snow rating is a bonus, as well as the warranty.

I have, actually. I had them on my list in the OP, but I was limited to 3 attachments, so I figured I would cut the Toyos out. They're probably very comparable to the Nittos, I'm guessing, with the added benefit of coming in the 265/65R18 size as well.

I've run that tire on a lot of different vehicles, a lot of different sizes too. Les Schwab is expensive, but over all it's a great tire. I guess, with all the trucks I had it on I've averaged 50,000 miles on each set of them. 8-)

I don't see a size listed that would fit without much trimming. It'd be nice to go up to 32", but looking where my stock size sits now, I'll probably have to do some trimming on the aft side of the front wheel wells with 31.5". If I could swing it, I'd love to wait for 285/65R18 Nitto Trail Grapplers. They look like a pretty good tire...

I would say to wait for the Trail Grapplers. Ive actually seen them in person when I went and got my tires put on. I tried to buy them, but they didnt have them in 16" diameter, and really werent in production yet. They are a SWEET looking tire.

I don't see much siping on the trail grapplers. I'd either get them siped, or find another tread, since you have rainy season and then slightly-rainy season. Just my 2 cents. They are badass-looking tires though.

Shot a message to Pro Comp on the 285/60R18 All-Terrain, as there was a discrepancy between the site and catalog on the tread depth. One showed 12/32, other showed 18/32. Big difference... There reply was that they are 12/32. :slap:

Looks like I've really narrowed it down to the Nitto Terra Grappler or Toyo Open Country. :coffee:

Since I just got the last bill from my divorce lawyer :wallbash:, I might be able to start on this project in a couple months.

Also look at the General Grabber AT... They look like the BFG AT, but are a LOT cheaper, and get better ratings...

Mike

ETA: 265/70-18 (still a 32" tire) is $161 each (At Tire Rack)
