Looks like the gasket is not meant for gas, though. Its a red rubber gasket. Now I have to order gaskets! I should have ordered them at the same time. :viking:

The red rubber gasket is what most of the military cans come with... It's meant for diesel fuel... I've got 4 5-gal cans with red gaskets and gasoline in them (generator), and they're swolen, but still hold tight, and seal air/fuel...

Mike, do you store yours with gasoline resting against the gasket?

They are stored vertically (i.e., no), but they have been in the bed of my truck, and in my car, with gasoline against the gasket (in the sun, closed windows) all day without issues... not the same, I know, but it's not like I filled them, and haven't tipped them over or anything...

I'm just going to be using RTV silicone gasket maker for mine... will let you know how that works. Still need to find the paint for the cans and wire brush the white crap off the top of the lids.

Two concerns:

RTV gasket maker is not meant to be a reusable gasket... isn't it one of those things where, if you disassemble the parts, you have to redo the gasket? Does it seal twice?

The enamel coating for the potable water... is there any compatibility concerns with the gasoline? Couldn't the enamel dissolve in the gas? Be 100% sure, or you're going to gunk up your fuel system.

I've checked out the enamel coating, with gas left overnight in the can, then the sides scrubbed. Nothing came off. I assume it's baked on.

As far as the RTV goes, I believe that Permatex makes a MotoPlus gasket maker designed for frequently disassembled parts that may do the trick. I may just find some gasket material and cut it when I have the time. Gotta clean up the cans and paint them first... I am going with red, but I think you guys'll like the results.

Also, I'll be using wax paper between the parts to make a reusable gasket, not simply bonding the RTV to the lid. See here: http://www.submarineboat.com/waterproofing.htm (scroll down to "RTV Silicone Gasket")

Well, called to see if the gaskets listed on their site would work on the big mouth cans, NO GO...

So I searched... came across this...

Then I searched for the sheets, found this!

SO... I think I'll be good to go!!!

Now, are you guys talking about the large mouth cans (being water cans, which I gather they are), or are you also talking about the 2.5 gallon cans?
