Delorme Earthmate

Hey guys, if you check out my build thread you'll see some new pics I posted of the Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 package I bought.

I know some of you guys have these units in your rides...could you offer a newbie some advice and tips for the setup, and navigating through the interface.

What are some of your favorite functions? Have you paid to use the photo library? Can we trade routes that we have saved with each other?

And lastly, how many individual computers can I put this software on?

Is the software Delorme Topo USA or something different?

yes, my apologies...... The map software on the disc included is the new "TOPO USA V8.0"

I love to use a split screen with downloaded USGS topos on the left at a different magnification than the Delorme trail data on the right. Can change the data layer on the left to be aerial photos if I downloaded them from Delorme. With the addition of Canadian raster-scanned Topo maps, it's a great deal for you. Multiple computers can run the software - the download library key works on multiple computers but the data is locked to the one that downloads it. That's why I use my tablet on my desk most of the time, to download data before a trip.

Bill... I recently ran into an issue of not being able to route from a road onto a 4WD trail. I can route either/or... but not both at the same time. Have you encountered this problem? Most of the trails I hit are categorized as 'roads'... but sometimes they are special designations... and I can't route through them... it just shows that dotted X line - implying I should walk there.

So to confirm, I can put this on my desktop and laptop. But the images I download to the desktop are not carried over to the laptop.

Zero: You have it right. You need to download to both if you want to use them on both. (IIRC) The Delorme support forums have Delorme staff watching them, and they ROCK!

James: It's a problem all right. You need to trace the trail with a "draw" tool, and make it into a routable road. Search for a tutorial on "drawing a routable road". You can save the change to disk, though, for the future. I hardly ever do this, though. I make it up as I go along mostly.

Where do I find tutorials? I want to get my self familiarized with the software. I have spent some time clicking around and reading the user guide. But I learn better with tutorials.

If you don't like the on-line ones, try forums.delorme.com and poke around for tips and hints. IME there's no substitute for reading a tiny bit of the manual, they just playing with the software.
