Short jack, and that's the one supplied under the passenger's seat. Go figure. Seems like Toyota has issues selecting the right jack to include it with a vehicle.
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Toyota also has issues with designing cars that don't induce drowsiness... current tacoma excluded.

Not really, they're just so revolutionary that they adapted the technology from airplanes like the Citation X and the A320, so their cars have autothrottle and FADEC.

So I am wondering, for those of without hilifts, or those of us with hilifts...what jack do you carry around in case of flats? Or what kind of jack other than a hilift do you guys carry around for emergencies?

Unless you are running 40's+, the stock jack to the axle will always work.

After getting stuck (high centered in some ruts) I think I will have to get a high lift ....totally could have used it to jack up the back end and fill in the ruts!!!

Sidenote: Tacomas DO NOT induce death; I got rolled down the highway by an 18wheeler in mine. Me and my roommate made it out with no scratches just a bruise on my side from the seat belt buckle holding me up. It was a 99 model I don't know how the new ones fair with something like that.

Can you post a pic? It's perfectly OK for the block to touch the rim because it's got a rubber cover. If you had a rim with minimal dishing like the OEM rims combined with small tires, I could see the block extending too high and almost missing the tire, but you could always twist the straps to shorten their effective length.

Image

Edit: Here's a picture of the first time I used the HiLift in the wild when I was almost stock (always practice at home when you get one for the first time), and you can see the block wasn't close to touching the rim. You're not choosing wheel spokes at the bottom of the wheel are you? That's unstable, and the wheel could spin.

For the simple ease of operation, and since I already have it in the truck, I use my highlift + liftmate + jackstand for tire changing operations. I'm not patient enough to use the stock bottle jack.
