Tire Carrier Idea

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

by HARDTRAILZ » Thu Oct 08, 2009 12:58 pm

i was in Lowes parking lot yesterday when I saw a newer Suburban on 37's sticking up and drove around to take a gander at it. WOW it had a full size spare on a swingaway hitch in the rear. I looked and they had left the plactic bumper cover like we have, but cut an access hole to the frame on the passenger side and some L shaped steel protruding through to a swingaway carrier. Seems so simple but I had not thought of it. Any issue with us doing something similar?

I would think the frame is strong enough, or cut through both sides and at at each end and then simply find a swinging tire carrier, even if you attach to both sides the crossbar would be below the hatch opening.

Or I thought since you can find take off tire carriers fairly cheap, thinking s-blazers, you could run a bar out from frame, 90 up with a piece of square stock to attach the carrier to and just have stop tabs so it wont swing into the TB.

The Suburban looked better than what I have seen for a tire carrier for us and it fit closer than most I have seen for us. Still kept most of factory look for the bumper, just a lil section cut for the att to the frame. I did not get picks , but I did notice the decal on the truck and emailled the place since it is only 15 miles away. Maybe I can get a better look soon.

So what do you think of mounting one off the frame?

It's an option... but for the time/money spent, I think most would rather go with a hitch mounted carrier. But that is just my $0.02

I think it's a great idea! There are a few land cruiser builds on expo that have done this quite nicely!

One note, uur metal 'bumper' under the plastic fascia doesn't extend all the way out to the corners, unfortunately. Since the pivot needs to be past the rear hatch to allow it to open, you'll probably need to build a strong extension!

Versus the hitch carrier... This mod would allow the tire to sit closer to the body of the truck. Of course, if you use the glass, the tire will need to be 'swung'. Since it's 'custom', adding some fuel can storage or extra's should be nice and easy :)

I was thinking of a flat 2x3 tube steel welded on top of frame rail, since i have the body lift, there should be room. Then a pivot point welded on with a 2 inch square stock coming straight up and then 2 inch square stock over to the center where i coul cut up my slide in reciever tire carrier and use its mounting plate and vertical tube. The big concern is figuring out what joint/pivot attachment. I havent really researched it, but I like the close to the body idea and the swing away versus lay down aspect. Would be nice to incorporte a drop pin to hold it when shut and when open.

Time for research, but figured I would share my idea.

Does sound like a sweet option.. I myself would rather a swinging carrier VS the flod down. But the Tire Gate doesn't appeal to me at all.

Would be cool tho to see done on our platform. For now tho I think my only option w/o hacking away or too much modification is the receiver folding carrier. Once I own my TB I'll do whatever I want with it..

Time for research, but figured I would share my idea.

I purchased a kit a while back that including the latch, spindle, tire carrier mounts to make a custom rear bumper/swing away carrier. Just haven't gotten around to it.

I'm trying to find the threads over on Expo where I've seen these before, but my google skills are lacking today :hissyfit: I think what you have in mind would exactly match what these guys did on their cruiers/discoveries.

In the meantime, I was able to find what this guy did - side mounts. I know this has been talked about before and thought I would share. Kinda big bulky looking, but it works:

I would actually be really interested in that! its not that bulky looking, and I think with our rear being a little more rounded it would fit nicely! I like how it keeps it tight against the back!

Ahh, yes. Those exterra's are convenient with their 'modular' bumper and sides. I'll start searching around expo again to see if I can find that hidden bumper tire carrier like the OP was after...

After looking at their site and pricing, labor should be included. If not I couldn't consider their products anything more than Bling. :hissyfit:

If I recall, shrockworks is already like 6 months behind on production... worse than Kennesaw.

Shrockworks is certainly known as one of the highest-end bumper manufacturers out there though,... and highly regarded. I think we should also be careful contacting companies asking them to look into our platform if we aren't actively pursuing purchasing a product. Its like the boy who cried wolf.

I have been looking at swing outs considering I am thinking of doing this exact same thing. Has any one followed threw on this idea since it was posted over a year ago?

I hate to bring back such an old and dead thread, but has anybody followed through with a similar idea on our platform? The side mounts don't look all that bad.

Nobody's ever done it. Makes more sense for lightweight 31's and such. Not 33-35's. The body would bend without reinforcement.

I'm in the process of making one much like karo's rear tire carrier. the tire will be close to the gate but sit down in the recess of our rear bumpers (at least on the 02-06) I'm going to mount the tire with the license plate to the left of it on the arm itself. I will post pictures this weekend when I have most of it completed.
