Opinions desired... Smittybilt XRC10 Comp Winch

Dumping ground for offroad Trailblazer or Envoy general discussion.

My point, sir, is that while I could indeed buy the XRC10 for 389, I'm interested in the COMP EDITION which COMES WITH SYNTHETIC LINE! for the tender price of around $$550 or so, which would be CHEAPER than buying the regular winch and then adding synthetic line. Yes, I am aware that the standard XRC-10 comes with steel cable, as does the XRC-8

I will look again.

I will look some but, thats 129 for 92' of 1/2"

Thanks, I see what you mean. I'm trying to find out if there is any other difference between the 2 winches besides the line. I'm more interested in the handling and safety aspects of the synthetic line than in the weight aspects. However, that 1/2" Tuff Stuff line has no written rating, and looks kinda shady to me... will look on amazon though.

Then the thing to have said would have been "Yes, but those come with steel line, and I want the Comp Edition with synthetic."

I know you wanted the comp winch, but you were responding to him posting the standard cable winches...

Fine by me. You just weren't very clear, is all...

Fair enough, I failed to specify after somebody posted the other model and got off the specific product I was asking about. Now back on course :D

My bad. I missed the comp part.

I would be a little leary of that synthetic as well, but it was the best i could come up with. I can ask my ramsey guy how much they charge since the prices on stuff he has quoted so far are decent. You looking for 100' of 3/8?

I like the stell because you can go around or over rocks, concrete, whatever is necessary, but i do see the synthetic advantages on some things. I think it is a personal preference/use thing.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

If you can find the synthetic rope for around the same price as the difference between the standard and comp versions, you might just get the standard version and buy the synthetic line seperate... That would give you 100' of steel cable for extension and such, for free...

Yes, I'm looking at about 100' of 3/8" synthetic line for pricing purposes. The Comp edition comes with about 94' IIRC. As far as rocks go, most of the lines offer something akin to a "rockguard" sleeve that goes over part of the line, and I'm more interested in winching out of mud, snow, and the like than rocks, based on where I travel.

That is a good point about the price for the comp vs the standard + synthetic line, and is part of the reason I'm trying to find out if there are any other differences between the two winches. I believe a trip to my local 4WP is in order.

The best prices I could find for reputable syn line was http://www.amsteelblue.com/. That's what I have.

However, now that I have it, I sometimes wish I had gone with 50' of line on the winch, with a 50' extension... Makes more sense in my mind now... but I didn't consider it before.

If I may step in for a moment. Id like to lend my expertise as a profesional stunt rigger in the film industry, as well as level 3 high angle rescue trained.

Please make sure that none of your cable is made in china. It is not made as well as the American cortage (Cortage is a naval term for any type of rope, or cable). For some reason the correct spelling evades me at the moment hahaha.

We almost always use Blue steel cable, and once it is highly stressed, we toss it. Its peace of mind, especially when human life is involved.

Also please read and clearly understand what the working load and use of the cable you have is as stated by the manufacturer. If you use it for something it is not intended for, or too much stress then all the liability is on you for personal harm, injuring another person, or destroying property.
